Thor: The Dark World is yet to go into its third weekend and has already crossed the half a billion mark at the worldwide box office. But now it’s heading into a weekend against the highly anticipated The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

While everyone is expecting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to blow Thor: The Dark World out of the sky this weekend, the Thor sequel has done quite well for being one of the less popular Marvel characters.

The film hit theaters November 8 and opened with $86 million at the domestic box office, although it would go on to beat The Best Man Holiday during its second weekend by $6 million.

While Thor is an integral part of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, his character hasn’t been as well received as some of the other Marvel single character films. Not to mention, he often gets overshadowed by his mischievous Tumblr-takeover brother, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston.

What’s more important is that while Thor: The Dark World is going to start slipping at the box office, the first film only made a total of $449 million worldwide, so Marvel has to be happy that the film has crossed $500 million before its third weekend.

We’ll be very interested in seeing how much Thor 2 slips this weekend as it battles against Catching Fire, which is getting incredible reviews, and is expected to pull in a jaw-dropping $175 million in its first weekend.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Jennifer Lawrence’s second Hunger Games’ film crept even a bit higher as fans flock to the midnight showings tonight.
