Marvel has finally nabbed a director for Thor: Ragnarok, with Flight of the Conchords‘ director Taika Waititi reportedly in negotiations to direct the third Thor film.

The Wrap reports that Taika Waititi is currently finishing up negotiations to take on Thor 3, which is certainly a unique choice considering Waititi isn’t a name we’d been hearing about. But, Marvel is known for choosing talented directors, and it’s exciting to learn that the film’s production is moving forward.

Taika Waititi is a veteran TV director, having directed episodes from the previously mentioned Flight of the Conchords, The Inbetweeners, and more recently What We Do in the Shadows. The vampire mockumentary has become a bit of a cult hit, so maybe it’s what caught Marvel’s eye for what should be the most interesting Thor movie to date.

Apparently the director beat out quite a few more mainstream directors, including Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, Rawson Marshall Thurber, and Rob Letterman. It’s interesting that Marvel continues the hiring of somewhat less-proven film directors for what are massively expensive projects. We’ve also seen this with the hiring of Jon Watts for Spider-Man’s first solo film with the studio.

Thor: Ragnarok’s plot is still a bit of a mystery, considering we don’t know where all the Avengers will be once the film hits theaters, but the story is reportedly about a world-ending event that will heavily involve Thor’s home of Asgard.

What’s more interesting is that this will be the final film before Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, which means it should have to include quite a bit of the overall story as we head into the final two Avengers’ films.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released in theaters on November 3, 2017.
