Thor: Love and Thunder is highly anticipated by Thor fans, and according to Taika Waititi, it might include a cancer storyline.

Spoilers from the Jason Aaron comic run of Mighty Thor (and, by extension, some mild Thor: Love and Thunder spoilers ahead). Read on at your own risk!

If you’ve read Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor, then you are probably well aware of what we’re talking about when we mention a “cancer storyline.” It’s an element from the comic books that the writer and director of Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi, has expressed an interest in including it in his film.

In The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman in the movies) is battling breast cancer, and she finds herself fighting to survive while also carrying the mantle of being Thor. So, we watch her looking frail and sick one minute while she’s going through chemo treatment, and the next, she’s kicking ass as Thor, thanks to the power Mjolnir gives her (a power that also happens to attack her chemo treatments, making her Midgardian body sicker and sicker).

So, can we expect to see that element in Thor: Love and Thunder? According to Waititi himself, we might.

As he explained to Variety, “I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally I really love that storyline, but whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.”

Waititi went on to explain that it’s not been decided yet if Thor: Love and Thunder will be a complete copy and paste from Aaron’s books, or if it will simply borrow elements from the story while making changes for the big screen.

“We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes. Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine,'” Waititi says.

If we do see Jane battling cancer onscreen, it will certainly be one of the biggest physical hurdles we’ve seen any of our MCU heroes battle. Either way, with Taika Waititi behind the helm of Thor: Love and Thunder, we know it’s going to be amazing.

Thor: Love and Thunder is reported to begin shooting in early 2020, and the film will hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
