Alan Taylor, director of Thor 2 and the upcoming Terminator Genisys, finally shares his dark Marvel story.

Thor: The Dark World is generally considered one of Marvel’s weakest offerings in recent years.

After the generally liked first movie (directed by Kenneth Branagh), Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor’s take on the franchise left a bitter taste in many fans’ mouths.

But was it really Taylor’s vision that translated to the big screen?

While promoting Terminator Genisys, Taylor has finally opened up about his experience directing a Marvel movie, and we can’t say his comments come as a big shock.

“I’ve learned that you don’t make a $170 million movie with someone else’s money and not have to collaborate a lot,” Taylor tells Uproxx.

Taylor calls his Thor 2 experience “particularly wrenching,” because, “I was sort of given absolute freedom while we were shooting, and then in post it turned into a different movie. So, that is something I hope never to repeat and don’t wish upon anybody else.”

While we’re sure there is blame (to the extent that this word can be applied) to be dealt on both sides, Taylor’s sentiments strongly echo what Joss Whedon had to say after wrapping up Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Discussing the post-production process, Whedon admitted that Marvel was completely unwilling to compromise on certain points, and in some instances, he had no choice but to accept their demands, or they’d cut something he loved.

“I respect these guys, they’re artists, but that’s when it got really, really unpleasant,” Whedon said, indicating that perhaps shooting one movie and editing together another is not always the best way to make a movie.

It seems like Marvel and the Russo Brothers are on the same wavelength, however, seeing as how Marvel has essentially trusted the pair with Phase 3: The Russos are directing both Captain America: Civil War, and the two-part Avengers finale.
