New on DVD & Blu-Ray:

Anonymous

Anonymous is a pretty great film that never got much attention during its theatrical run. While I don’t really buy into conspiracy it proposes, the film is nevertheless a pretty well thought out and executed historical thriller. As I wrote in my review, “The bottom line is that Anonymous presents a very fascinating concept against a believable and unique historical backdrop to provide an emotionally and visual satisfying piece of entertainment. When coupled with Rhys Ifans tremendous performance as the Earl of Oxford, it isn’t a film you’ll forget anytime soon.” I still stand by what I wrote back in October and would encourage you to give this one a view.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

I saw this film back in November and liked it. It’s definitely over-the-top, the gags definitely get a bit gross and out of hand, but I think these films do have heart somewhere deep down. In fact, star John Cho seems to share this opinion, as he shared when I interviewed him back in November, “If Harold and Kumar are real and set up like they always are, as a romance between the two guys and a tale of love between the two guys, then almost anything goes around them. I feel that this is the key, and you do that. This is a Christmas romance movie between two man you just do that, then just have everything else happen around them. I feel like that’s the formula if there is one.” I’d definitely suggest renting this one, particularly if you’re a fan of the past Harold and Kumar films.

Opens Saturday, February 10:

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1

I saw this film having never read the books, and from a film standpoint I’d say it’s in the middle of the road compared with the rest of the Twilight franchise. I wasn’t a very big fan of it mainly because it was split into two films and makes this one a boring slog for the majority of the film. To think that only three or four important events occur over the span of the two hour runtime. That’s simply too long. That being said, for Twilight fans it’s probably a safe bet to assume you’ll enjoy this (and probably have already seen it), as our own Andrew wrote in his review, “Like all of the Twilight films, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is a film for the fans. There’s no doubt that this will top the list for most of the loyal Twihards, and I’m not surprised that critically it has been doing poorly. Whether a critic or a fan, it’s important to remember that the serious box office draw of The Twilight Saga is very helpful to Hollywood in a time when film revenue is smaller than ever.”
