Responding to the tragic shooting in Colorado at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, police forces in major cities like Los Angeles and New York are stepping up security.

The Wall Street Journal reports on the various measures being put into place around the country:

The Department of Homeland Security held a conference call Friday morning in response to the Colorado shooting to discuss measures that can be taken to reduce the potential for similar incidents, Mr. Klein said. On the call were representatives from the mall industry, Major League Baseball and others, he said.

“As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing in the five boroughs,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement.

The Los Angeles Police Department sent officers to check some theaters showing “The Dark Knight” after news broke of the Colorado shooting. LAPD commander Andrew Smith said Friday morning that it remained unclear what action police might take later Friday and through the weekend.
