The Wonderful 101: Remastered release date will arrive in the States nearly a full month before it hits in Japan.

Originally released in 2013 for the Nintendo Wii U, Platinum Games’ hack and slash action-adventure game The Wonderful 101 will sail its way over to PS4, Switch and PC on May 19, 2020.

Breaking its Nintendo console exclusivity, The Wonderful 101: Remastered is a game being backed by a highly successful Kickstarter crowdfunding. While the game’s original Wii U release was critically acclaimed, its mediocre sales numbers left a lot to be desired.

In The Wonderful 101, players are tasked with protecting Earth from the alien forces of the Geathjerk Federation. The Wonderful Ones rise up to defeat the Geathjerk by mass morphing superheroes into formations such as a giant fist or a gun.

The original Wii U release heavily relied on touch controls, which may be why the remaster is skipping Xbox consoles. You can still play Wonderful on the Wii U without touch controls, but it makes the game a lot easier to play when you can simply draw the formations that you desire.

Colorful and loud, this game markets to a somewhat younger audience interested in games in the LEGO series and of the Super Mario variety. As the world is more obsessed than ever with superheroes, The Wonderful 101: Remastered‘s audience will likely skew a bit higher in age, due in part to the original audience that grew up on the Wii U.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered will release in Europe on May 22 and in Japan on June 11.

Before simultaneous worldwide releases became more commonplace, video games would often release in Japan as much as a year earlier than they did Stateside, usually due to the translation process and the gauging of Western interest.

The Wonderful 101 already has a strong cult following in the West, which may lend to the early digital and physical release in the States.
