Casting on ABC’s upcoming reboot of The Wonder Years is picking up steam!

UPDATE (3/18/2021): According to Variety, actors Dulé Hill and Laura Kariuki have both joined the cast of ABC’s The Wonder Years reboot.

First up, Psych vet Dulé Hill will take on the role of Bill Williams— father of main character, Dean. Bill works as a music professor by day, but moonlights as a funk musician by night. Described as “almost always calm and composed,” and by adult Dean as “the baddest guy I knew,” Bill’s primary goal is to ensure that his family stays self-sufficient.

Meanwhile, Laura Kariuki will take on the role of Dean’s teenage sister, Kim. Described as “confident, bright, and popular,” Kim and Dean tend to butt heads from time to time, but overall have a good sibling relationship. It seems as though Kim’s relationship with her parents is a bit on the rocks, however. While mom and dad are pushing for her to prep for college, Kim’s pushing back— and questioning the idea of even going to college at all.

Both Dole and Kariuki join previously announced cast member Saycon Sengbloh, who will take on the role of Dean and Kim’s mother, Lillian.

Leading the cast is Elisha Williams, who will take on the role of main character, Dean.

ORIGINAL STORY (3/15/2021): ABC’s reboot of The Wonder Years has officially found its star!

According to Variety, actor Elisha “EJ” Williams has scored the coveted lead role in the upcoming The Wonder Years reboot coming down the pipeline at ABC.

In a special move, Fred Savage (who will serve as an executive producer, in addition to directing the pilot for the reboot) was on hand to let Williams know he’d scored the leading role.

Savage, of course, starred in the original Wonder Years (which ran from 1988 to 1993) as Kevin Arnold– a kid growing up in the suburbs during the early 1960s and 1970s.

In ABC’s new The Wonder Years pilot, Elisha “EJ” Williams will star as 12-year-old Dean. As with the original, the series will take place in the 1960s. This time, however, it’ll be set in Montgomery, Alabama. The show will follow along as Dean struggles to figure out his place both within his family, and within the world at large— not an easy feat given the turbulent times he’s living in.

Behind the camera, Saladin Patterson serves as writer and executive producer on the series. Others involved on the producing front include Lee Daniels and Marc Velez. Meanwhile, Neal Marlens, who created the original coming-of-age classic, is on board to serve as a consultant on the reboot.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect to see The Wonder Years pilot debut via ABC.
