Nothing is currently official, but reports are saying that Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street will not be released on November 15 as planned.

HitFix initially reported the potential delay. Apparently almost nobody besides director Martin Scorsese had seen the film until this weekend. Now that Paramount executives have been given a chance to see the early cut of the film, it appears that there is more work left to be done in order for it to be released into theaters than previously thought.

What exactly is the issue? As is typical with Scorsese directed films, the first cut is very long. Currently, The Wolf of Wall Street is almost three hours in length, and, more importantly, it contains elements that would almost guarantee an NC-17 rating for the film, something that the studio will certainly not allow to happen.

With an all but certain release date delay looming, the question becomes “when will it be released?” Currently, it looks like there are two different options, both which have far different lasting effects.

It looks like it may be possible that the film will be bumped to Christmas. This would force Jack Ryan: Shadow One to be released in 2014.

The other potential option is that the film won’t be released this year at all. This is looking increasingly likely, and Showbiz 411 is reporting that this will be the case. Again, there has been no announcement from Paramount. If the film does indeed get bumped to 2014, it is almost certain that it would get bumped an entire year. The film will be a big Oscar play, and the studio wouldn’t want to sacrifice any awards by having it play before Oscar season.
