Drill has everyone doing his dirty work on tonight’s episode of The Whispers season 1. Will John Doe be able to stop him?

‘The Whispers’ season 1, episode 4 recap

The episode begins with Minx Lawrence writing a message as Drill dictates. The next thing we know, Henry Bennigan comes downstairs and finds Minx standing in his living room. She tells Henry that Drill wants to help him get what he wants, if he will help Drill get what he wants too.

Next we see Jessup hanging outside a Homeland Security mobile command post near the nuclear power plant as Wes and Claire arrive to let them know what is going on. The plant is still running hot, but all normal procedures are being followed.

Henry and Minx have moved up to Henry’s room to discuss the directions. Henry decides to play Drill’s game, and Minx is going to stay behind to keep his grandmother occupied.

They believe they have successfully neutralized whatever meltdown threat there is, but then an evacuation alert goes off. All non-essential personnel are required to evacuate, and that gives John Doe/Sean Bennigan the opportunity to get inside.

Henry’s grandma made some snacks for the kids and runs upstairs to deliver them. Minx sneaks downstairs and gets a knife off the kitchen counter. She creepily follows his grandma back upstairs to show that she cut her finger.

Henry, meanwhile, has ridden his bike to “Black Eyed Sue” which is the name of a ferry boat. He is now onto the second directive.

As Sean walks into the plant, the electrical devices he passes stop functioning. Meanwhile, the FBI just found out that while the problem was reported yesterday, nothing has been done about it. (If you recall, Harper sent a confirmation text from her dad’s phone and then threw it in the hazardous waste bin.)

Claire calls home to check on Henry, and his grandmother mentions that Minx has been there. That alarms Claire due to Minx’s connection to Drill (who they think is Sean). When Claire asks her to put Henry on the phone, his grandmother can’t find him anywhere. Claire thinks that Sean’s real objective may have been to get his son back, so she has the FBI put out an Amber Alert for him.

Henry has found the ‘yellow dancer’ that Drill told him to look for next, and is now following the creek to find the “treasure that he seeks.”

Claire leaves to go find Henry and just as she pulls away, the FBI gets eyes on Sean on the plant grounds. They watch him enter the plant without an electronic keycard.

Sean gives the doctor a gun and tells her that if he does something bad, he wants her to shoot him. This is why he brought her here. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do next, and he brought her as insurance. He starts convulsing, and armed agents get hands on him. Wes calls Claire to say they have Sean in custody, and Claire finds Henry’s bike parked on the side of the road pretty close to the plant.

Lena Lawrence is watching coverage of the crisis at the power plant. Wes asks if Minx has been home all morning, and she says yes. Minx has quite the story for what she’s been up to all this time, and they buy it.

In a room at the plant, Sean and the doctor are being patted down, and Sean loses it. As he freaks out, the lights start to flicker and systems shut down. The emergency cooling system fails, causing Wes to want to stomp right in and ask Sean what is going on.

Henry has moved on to the next directive, which tells him to go down a hole, “into the dark below.” He finds a covered manhole with a ladder down and starts his climb.

Sean starts carving something into the paint on the wall with his metal handcuffs. Wes gets his chance to talk to Sean, and he’s surprised to learn that’s his name. Wes wants to know who is helping Sean, and Sean tells him that it’s not his plan, but he’s seen the one who makes all this happen. Wes looks like he might be believing him.

Claire arrives and begs Wes to ask Sean what he has done with Henry. When Claire starts talking to Sean, he loses his cool and the camera in the room shorts out. The emergency lights come on and show Sean gone and the officer guarding him has been shot.

The plant is at the brink of a full meltdown. The only option is to open the floodgates and allow the waters of the Chesapeake to cool down the reactor. They have to flood the tunnels that Henry is currently exploring. Claire fears for Henry’s life, and begs Wes to let her go in and find her son. He lets her go, giving her a radio to keep in touch.

Lena asks Minx if she has any information from Drill to help Wes. Minx gives her a non-answer, but ultimately doesn’t know anything that can help. Claire sneaks in as they walk the doctor out to the perimeter.

Sean enters a room and sees Henry emerging from the tunnels into a large room on a couple of monitors. Henry arrives where he is supposed to and asks Drill why he hasn’t found his father. Claire is frantically running as Wes directs her to where she will hopefully find Henry. Claire watches as her son stands in the very place where the water will be flooding in a matter of moments. She refuses to let him die alone. She’s going to stay right there.

Sean enters the room just as the water was going to begin flooding the room and closes a door, stopping it. Claire runs in to hug Henry. Sean stands there watching, but doesn’t know who he is truly looking at. The plant goes into full meltdown and plumes of radioactive gas are released into the atmosphere. Wes watches as the gases seem to implode on themselves in midair, and then disappear.

Sean, Claire, and Henry escape the cooling tower and are approached by a hazmat team. They are all clean of radiation. There is no sign of the meltdown that just occurred. Henry then exposes his secret, that he can hear, to stop the men from hurting his dad. He tells Claire about Drill.

Minx lets her mom know that Sean isn’t Drill. She tells her, “Grownups never really know what’s going on. Even when they think they do.”
