The Weeknd is heading to HBO for his next project, which will find the artist returning to the world of television.
According to Variety, The Weeknd (whose real name is Abel Tesfaye) is currently in the process of developing a brand new original series over at HBO, which currently has a working title of The Idol.
Per the outlet, the series would center around a female pop singer “who starts a romance with an enigmatic LA club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.”
The Weeknd would be involved on the project both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Specifically, the “Blinding Lights” singer would star in the HBO original series, in addition to serving as a co-writer on the show.

The critically acclaimed artist isn’t the only notable name involved behind the scenes. Also on board to work on The Idol is Sam Levinson.
Levinson is no stranger to working with HBO, having previously created the Emmy Award winning hit series, Euphoria for the premium cable network.
Others involved behind the scenes include Reza Fahim, Joseph Epstein, and Mary Laws.
Fahim, along with Levinson and Tesfaye will be billed as creators on the forthcoming series. Meanwhile, Epstein will write alongside Tesfaye, in addition to serving as a showrunner and an executive producer. Also set to write on The Idol is Mary Laws, who will also be credited as a co-executive producer on the series.
Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see The Idol debut via HBO.
