Now with three days of DVR viewers included, AMC has announced The Walking Dead season 4 premiere ratings are at a record-breaking 20.2 million.

High School Musical previously held the record as the most watched non-sports cable program at 17 million viewers, but The Walking Dead season 4 was able to easily surpass the previous high set by the 2007 straight-to-TV movie on Disney Channel. While High School Musical 2 also went straight to television, the threequel premiered in theaters.

On Sunday the zombie drama scored 16.1 million viewers, which easily surpassed the show’s previous record of 12.4 million for the season 3 finale earlier this year.

The Walking Dead season 4, episode 2 airs this Sunday on AMC and is titled “Infected.” The name for the episode shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who watched the premiere and saw the surprise twist at the end. Reads the second episode’s synopsis, “The group faces a new enemy; Rick and the others fight to protect their hard-won livelihood.”

A common criticism about the show is that it moves a little too slow and lacks a high amount of action, so the pressure is on the network and showrunners to make sure they can retain a huge number of viewers. The show cannot wane because it is AMC’s top series and there are plans for a spinoff to keep running the franchise for years and years to come.
