Last night The Walking Dead season 3 finale aired on AMC. Like any ending, this one left us with some major cliffhangers.

Here are three questions that need to be answered as soon as possible in The Walking Dead season 4, because we’re teetering on the edge of these three cliffs.

1) Is Carl headed for total rebellion?

This writer believes it was right for Carl to kill the guy who was willing to turn over his gun in the tense forest scene. In these moments, Carl wasn’t able to trust that he wasn’t going to suddenly point his weapon and shoot. As Carl lectured to Rick later, there have been moments where people associated with Woodbury cannot be trusted in any capacity. He even pulled out the big card: Rick was in a room with The Governor and didn’t kill him. In some ways, Carl is a lot tougher than Rick.

Speaking on The Talking Dead last night, lead star Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) thought that Carl is out of control. “The vital thing is to bring civilization back to this child,” he said. While we agree that Carl has had anything but a normal childhood and needs to see what being a kid feels like again, he has been a very solid aspect of the group’s defensive team. Carl seems to be ready to leave his sheriff-like duty behind, however. He dropped his badge in front of Rick. With new people coming to the prison, maybe he’ll be able to meet a new kid or two who he can play with.

2) Where is The Governor?

Like many, we expected The Governor to die in the season 3 finale. The network had been promising that there would be “an eye for an eye,” meaning The Governor would take out his revenge (and we thought this would lead to his demise). But the only two good people who died were two of the most prominent people trying to restore order to the community: Andrea and Milton.

Now The Governor is on the run. His people turned against him following a strong defense by Rick’s team. Reports indicate that actor David Morrissey is set to return as a series regular in season 4, so this means he’ll continue to be a present cloud over the head of Rick. But, do we really want a whole second season of stand offs between these two leads? Which leads us to our next question…

3) Will the group stay in the prison for all of season 4?

We were getting bored with the prison about halfway through season 3 and expected the group to leave it by the end of the season. But now it looks like the prison will welcome a slew of people from Woodbury and thus stick around for a while longer.

While fresh faces may liven the place up a bit, it’s still a dreary, boring prison – now missing its look out towers. We’re hoping that the group moves out of the prison by no later than the middle of season 4. Each season we’ve seen the group in a different home, which helped freshen things up. Rick’s shoulders are now weighed down by caring for these additional people, and we can’t help but think that this is no time for Rick to take on more responsibility. Was there really no other person in Woodbury who could’ve taken up a leadership role and kept all the survivors there? And why not remain at Woodbury instead of going into the prison? The Governor knows the location of both camps, so neither is safer than the other.
