The Walking Dead mid-season 6 finale presented a busy hour of storytelling as Alexandria reeled from a big attack by walkers.

Poor Maggie. Only seconds after she sees Glenn’s green balloons fly into the sky, a walker invasion takes down Alexandria. The attack on the safe zone cannot be understated, as the number of walkers who are invading the home is insane.

The only solution for the residents is to run and hide, but before doing so a few of Alexandria’s people try to fight back. Deanna, the former-ish manager of the community, is one of them, and she suffers an injury. Carol also gets injured — but the extent of the attack is exaggerated to later fake out Morgan. (Oh, Carol, always the tricky one.) More on that later.

But Deanna… well, shit. After making it back to the house, she starts to receive some care from Michonne. Once some of the blood is cleaned up we see she’s suffered a clear bite. “Well… shit,” she says.

Indeed.

“I got to do what I wanted right up to the end,” she later tells Michonne, who just last week was reviewing Deanna’s expansion plans for Alexandria. Maybe Michonne will see those through in Deanna’s memory. If Alexandria survives this attack, that is.

Speaking of Deanna’s memory, she later asks Rick to take care of everyone in Alexandria (and compliments his beard).

Deanna’s final words are to Michonne: “Figure it out. Give ’em hell,” she says. She then kills a few walkers before letting them take her. She gave them hell.

With walkers converging on the house, there’s not much time to give Deanna the farewell she deserves. Rick asks his small group to cover themselves in walker guts so they can run to the armory undercover. It’s been a while, but they’re finally using that trick again! The timing couldn’t be better, as many viewers assumed that’s what Glenn did to save himself earlier in the season (but he didn’t).

In the final moments of the episode, Rick’s gang moves outdoors with their walker blankets overtop of them. Even poor baby Judith is covered in a bloody walker blanket. As they walk cautiously, Sam starts calling for his mom, who’s right in front of him: “Mom. Mom.”

Sam, you’ve become too much of a problem. Especially because your scene was the (main) episode’s cliffhanger.

Carl vs. Ron

Elsewhere during the episode, Ron traps Carl and tries to kill him with that gun we saw last week. Annoyingly, Carl doesn’t tell his dad about what just happened between him and Ron, but he does deliver a great line to the fellow kid: “You need to know something. Your dad was an asshole,” Carl reminds Ron. Maybe the best Carl moment ever?

To be fair, Carl probably thought Rick didn’t need any more drama on his plate at the moment. We just hope Carl doesn’t regret letting Ron live later — it’s doubtful that Ron’s feeling toward him will be changing anytime soon.

Carol vs. Morgan

The two beloved characters get in a big and emotionally-charged fight over what to do about Morgan’s wolf prisoner who’s been stuck with Denise. (The nurse, by the way, tried to help the wolf. She’s so nice!).

Carol and Morgan begin to physically fight right in front of the wolf, and it’s not fun to watch. Two huge characters going at it like this… it’s just not pleasant to see. It’s like watching mom and dad fight. Mom and dad, stop that!

Morgan ultimately gets the upper hand and sends Carol to the ground, seemingly knocking her out. The wolf then brings Morgan down and frees himself. Ugh, of course you shouldn’t have avoided killing this guy, Morgan.

Interestingly, the wolf proceeds to hold Denise hostage with a gun. Would he have used it on Eugene and the girls had he needed to? We know wolves don’t use guns.

The prologue

An additional two minutes of footage aired during Into the Badlands, and it was a bigger scene than you may’ve expected they’d air 10 minutes after the main episode freakin’ ended.

In it, Daryl, Abraham, and Sasha are on their way back to Alexandria before being stopped by members of the Saviors. They’re told their property now “belongs to Negan.” AH!

Finally, an explicit Negan reference. (Remember: Last month we learned the horrific character will be played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

Well… shit.

What did you think of ‘The Walking Dead’ mid-season 6 finale?

By the way, no spoilers, but I don’t like how Glenn and a Negan reference appeared in the same episode. You comic readers know why I say that.
