The Walking Dead is coming to an end— but not before AMC gives the groundbreaking series the sendoff it deserves.

On Wednesday (September 9), AMC announced that its long running zombie drama, The Walking Dead, would officially be concluding with an eleventh and final season.

Loyal fans of the series will have plenty of time to say goodbye to the show. In addition to announcing plans to conclude the flagship series, AMC also revealed that season 11 will be an expanded season that stretches out over the course of two years.

It’ll be comprised of a whopping 24 episodes total. With the previously announced six extra season 10 episodes scheduled for early next year, that means TWD fans can look forward to 30 more episodes before the show reaches its conclusion sometimes in late 2022.

The Walking Dead may be ending, but that doesn’t mean the franchise is going anywhere. In fact, AMC has already given the green light to a band new TWD spinoff, this time focusing on fan favorites Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride).

Set to premiere in 2023, the Daryl/Carol spinoff is set to be run by current TWD showrunner Angela Kang, who co-created the series with Scott M. Gimple.

Gimple, who serves as the chief content officer of the universe at AMC, is also working with AMC to develop a brand new anthology series called Tales of the Walking Dead.

“We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead— brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies,” said Gimple in a statement about the future of the franchise. “This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives.”
