Fans have known for some time just how deviant the Governor of Woodbury in The Walking Dead is, but last night brought his obsession with revenge to new heights. Today David Morrissey is dissecting what has the Governor so fixated on getting his revenge.

When we first met the Governor this season, it was clear that he wasn’t any good. However, he still seemed to care about those around him to some degree. Ever since Rick, Michonne, and Daryl attacked Woodbury, he’s been even worse. What changed? Penny, his daughter turned walker, was slayed by Michonne and since then he’s cared about nothing except avenging her.

David Morrissey, who portrays the Governor, explains to MTV that his character is only focused on his own goals. “He’s just after revenge now. It’s a very dark place, and a very brutalized place, but having one objective is a central place for a human being,” he said. “It’s a very scary place for the victims of that, but in a way, he’s in a much clearer place. He has a clarity to life now, just one objective: revenge, and that’s the elevator he’s traveling on. He doesn’t have many paths to tread anymore, he just has one. He’s pursuing that with brutal efficiency.”

To make things worse, this takes away his ability to negotiate when needed. We saw this with the talk with Rick, as the Governor no longer cares about what may be best for the people of Woodbury and only cares about killing everyone in the prison. Instead of taking care of those around him, he only wants to use them as his own personal army.

The Governor is also going to be turning his obsession with revenge on those around him that he feels betrayed by. Most recently, we saw this with Andrea, who tried to escape Woodbury and get back to Rick and the rest of the clan at the prison. Morrissey explains, “With Andrea, he can see that she’s torn between him and her old life, the life she led with Rick and his group. I think he feels terribly betrayed by that. I think he demands total loyalty not just of Andrea, but of Milton and the people around him.”

He also says that he believes the Governor really did care for Andrea, which may come as a shock to some fans. While some may think she was all part of some plan of his, Morrissey believes his character actually was in love with her. “I think he loved her. I think he absolutely loved her,” He said. “That loyalty felt deeper to him; they shared something with deep intimacy. I think he felt that he and Andrea could really build something together.”

Where does this all leave Milton, who perhaps has betrayed him the most? Morrissey does believe that Milton’s betrayal hits the Governor even harder than Andrea’s. However, there may be room for forgiveness for Milton. The actor explains that his character see’s that Milton is scared and is acting according to his fears. But the Governor feels that Woodbury is a combination of his and Milton’s dream. According to Morrissey, Milton’s betrayal is “very worrying for the Governor. We know he isn’t a totally rational man, so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.”

How do you think the Governor will deal with Milton?
