Is it a coincidence that The Walking Dead season 6, episode 13 aired during Women’s History Month? Or a week after International Women’s Day?

The guy-heavy Walking Dead decided to give the ladies an episode of their own for a change. And even if a few of the women were bad gals, we saw the Lady Saviors take on one of their own men. It was an episode about girl power, for sure.

It was women who were gathered in the bunker deciding what steps to take next. Women taking down the men. Women talking to women. Women threatening other women. Women tricking other women. And yeah, this episode definitely passed the Bechdel test.

Last week’s episode ended after Rick and co. learned that Carol and Maggie were kidnapped, but The Walking Dead 6×13, titled “The Same Boat,” jumped back in time a little bit to explain how they were captured.

Maggie doesn’t get the chance to accept Carol’s “Run! Be free! Don’t be this type of person!” offer, because a couple of the Saviors (Or should I say “couple of Negans?”) show up and hold them at gunpoint. Meanwhile, Rick has the Saviors’ Primo, and since this Savior mini-group (led by a woman named Paula) isn’t willing to negotiate with Rick about a trade, a standoff begins.

Carol and Maggie are taken to a holding cell, and the moment their captors leave them alone, they begin to try and break themselves free. Carol being Carol, she begins to play the Saviors as soon as they return to the holding area. “Look at you — bitch, how did you make it this far?” says one of them as Carol has a (fake?) panic attack. Clearly the Saviors are unaware of what our favorite cookie baker has done, but to viewers, it’s actually not clear if Carol is faking her anguish or not. After all, last episode she was reviewing the number of kills she had made so far, and didn’t appear to be happy about it. Her kill count, by the way, climbs higher by the end of the episode. She not too proudly tells Maggie that she’s killed 20 people now.

But Carol is a survivor, and when she needs to, she protects herself. This means that she’ll put on whatever act she needs to in order to get out of a bad situation, as she did tonight.

Towards the end of the hour Carol breaks herself free and finds Maggie, who was taken away to be interviewed (They got no info out of her, by the way). Then, Carol and Maggie begin bringing down the Savior girls one by one.

Paula is the last to go, but the kill comes at the cost of Carol’s sanity. Poor Carol. Whether she was faking anything at the beginning of the episode is still up for debate, but she was not faking anything at the end. The woman was seriously struggling with killing more people. The murders become a little easier to commit when one of the Saviors throws a knife across Maggie’s belly. That’s not going to be good news for the baby, is it?

Carol and Paula get into one more physical fight before the latter takes her last breath. Then, as if that weren’t enough for one day, Carol and Maggie kill another small-ish group of Saviors (men this time) via a nice fire.

It’s clear by the end of the episode that Carol, and to a similar extent Maggie, have had enough of death. They’re going to have to take some serious time away and reflect on what’s going on. While some may’ve thought that Carol was going to use her rosary to cut an enemy or two, it looks like she was seriously turning to religion to find some answers (Melissa McBride said on Sunday’s Talking Dead that Carol’s intentions with religion and the rosary are intentionally blurred for viewers).

Speaking of reflecting on what’s going on, Rick’s going to have to take a closer look at the Negan situation. Twice this episode we heard that the Saviors “are all Negan.” Any viewer who’s aware of the real Negan knows this is not literally true, but it may be metaphorically accurate. Do they mean that they all agree to go as far as Negan? Have they been instructed to call themselves Negan to keep the One True Negan hidden? While Team Rick may be fooled, viewers who keep up with The Walking Dead news aren’t: We know that a singular actor has been cast in the role of Negan.
