Tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead presented a major twist that no one saw coming.

Three episodes into season 6, The Walking Dead continues to surprise us. Your eyes did not deceive you: Glenn died at the end of tonight’s new episode.

Update: … Or is he? There’s mounting evidence suggesting Glenn is alive and well.

How it went down: Glenn and Nicholas were surrounded by walkers as they stood on top of a dumpster, and Nicholas — who had clearly been struggling emotionally this episode — unintentionally pulled Glenn down when he killed himself.

Glenn’s death was brutal. He fell into a herd of zombies and they started ripping his guts out relentlessly.

We should’ve known this was coming. All the way back in season 1, Glenn first met Rick via a radio as the latter was hiding in a tank. “Hey you… Dumbass… Yeah, you in the tank… Cozy in there?” Glenn asked.

Glenn called Rick a dumbass again tonight. It was a full-circle moment.

Glenn was one of the longest-running characters on the show with 83 episodes under his belt. According to IMDb, he, Andrew Lincoln (Rick), and Chandler Riggs (Carl) are the longest-serving cast members with 83 each.

None of the characters have yet to discover that Glenn has died, so we expect those revelations to come to light next week.

As if that twist wasn’t hurtful enough, Rick had to deal with a few assholes who tried to kill him at the RV. The enemies failed miserably, but when he tried to start up the van again, he couldn’t. Awful timing, too: A huge group of walkers were moving in as the episode ended.

The loss of Glenn hurts for several reasons, but to put it briefly: Glenn was the heart of the show. As Yvette Nicole Brown noted on The Talking Dead, he never killed a human during his run on the series and always believed in the best of people.

Speaking of The Talking Dead, the show’s In Memoriam segment did not mention Glenn. But really, is his fate up for debate?

Showrunner Scott M. Gimple confirmed in a statement during The Talking Dead that we will be seeing Glenn again to complete his story. It sounds like it’ll be through a flashback of some sort.

Alexandria lost several other residents tonight including Annie, David, and of course, Nicholas. Although they were minor deaths (especially when compared to Glenn), they’re worth mentioning. This was one dark, brutal episode.

What did you think of Glenn’s death on ‘The Walking Dead’?

It feels like the end times on this show, doesn’t it? The 90-minute premiere saw a huge, exciting plan go into effect. The second episode introduced one of the series’ worst enemies. And the third episode said farewell to a crucial character.

This season… is… insane.

By the way: Next week’s episode of The Walking Dead will be 90 minutes long.
