It was a tough night for one of the celebrity coaches on The Voice, as the remainder of their team was eliminated from the competition, thereby opening it up to the other coaches to win season 5.

The Eliminations

After host Carson Daly revealed five of the contestants voted through to the top 6 by America, the bottom three were revealed to be Team Blake’s Ray Boudreaux, Team Christina’s Matthew Schuler, and Team Cee Lo’s Caroline Pennell.

Each coach pleaded the case for their contestant, (except for Cee Lo, who seemed to write off any chance of winning the competition after losing Kat Robichaud last week, and gave a rather lackluster plea to save Caroline), after which time the fans could use their Twitter save for one contestant. When America’s five minutes were up, it was revealed that Matthew Schuler was saved, and Ray Boudreaux and Caroline Pennell would be going home.

Contestant performances

‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken’

The top 8 were joined by the Starbucks Chorus (which is exactly what it sounds like – singing baristas) to perform the classic “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”. It’s a beautiful song, and really showcased the beautiful harmonies between the contestants and the choir. It would have been nice, however, to have heard just the top 8 show off their harmonies alone. While the choir was beautiful, they’re not what The Voice is all about. Let’s hear what the contestants can do, all by themselves.

‘Apologize’/’All the Right Moves’

The top 8 performed a medley of hits by Team Adam’s mentor Ryan Tedder’s band One Republic. Tedder, we learned, will be writing an original song to be performed by The Voice finalists on this season’s finale, and released as the season 5 winner’s first single. Ray, Will, Caroline, and Jacquie kicked off the performance with “Apologize”, while James, Matthew, Cole, and Tessanne later took on “All the Right Moves.”

Guest performances

‘Burn’ – Ellie Goulding ft. James, Matthew, Will

Ellie Goulding was joined onstage by James Wolpert, Will Champlin, and Matthew Schuler to perform her new song “Burn”. The guys seemed to enjoy themselves, though you couldn’t really hear them very much. Afterwards, she told Carson that she felt like she was in a boy band, performing up there with all those boys. Apparently she’s the boy band member who doesn’t like to wear pants.

‘Amy’ – Cee Lo ft. Big Gipp

Cee Lo took the stage in another typically outrageous Cee Lo performance. Performing “Amy” with old Goodie Mob friend Big Gipp, Cee Lo worked the runway alongside some creepy statue mannequin models. He fell in love with one of them, Amy, and his love apparently was powerful enough to launch her off her perch and up to the ceiling. Sometimes, Cee Lo’s performances seem to come right out of a dream he’s having.

‘The Voice’ Confessional

This week’s Voice Confessional was all about conspiracy theories. Is Tessanne really Jamaican, or is her accent a fake? What’s hiding in Cole’s beard? Is Cee Lo an alien? What is UP with Blake’s shout-laugh? Answers to all this and more, in this week’s confessional video.

Tune in to see the top 6 perform on The Voice next Monday at 8 p.m. and find out out who makes the top 4 on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NBC.
