After the fans had the chance to use their instant save, two contestants were sent home this week, revealing The Voice season 5’s top eight contestants.

It was a hot night on The Voice, as host Carson Daly revealed the big news that coach Adam Levine has been named this year’s People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive. He showed off Adam’s cover shot, and it’s hard to disagree with the magazine’s choice. Then again, fans of The Voice have been appreciating Adam’s sexiness for years now. Adam’s true love Blake took the opportunity to point out that he thinks Adam is most beautiful on the inside, and the men shared a bromantic embrace.

The Results

Carson announced America’s votes over the course of the show, and in the end, the bottom three contestants were revealed: Team Cee Lo’s Kat Robichaud and Caroline Pennell, and Team Blake’s Austin Jenkes. Cee Lo and Blake both made their pleas, and America was once again given a last-minute chance to save their favorite contestant, using this season’s new Twitter fan save. But after America’s five minutes were up, the results were revealed: Caroline Pennell was saved, meaning Austin Jenckes and Kat Robichaud would not be moving forward in the competition.

The Performances

Team Christina’s Matthew Schuler and Jacquie Lee joined their coach to perform a medley of some of the Jackson family’s greatest hits, including Janet’s “Black Cat”, Michael’s “Bad”, and both siblings’ “Scream”. It was a great performance from all three vocalists, and definitely the best team performance we’ve seen so far. Jacquie and Christina started out with their own little duet, and it was once again clear that Christina is training the little diva in her own image, and Jacquie has quite a career ahead of her. As for Matthew, it was great to see him get to sing The King of Pop, and make the songs his own.

Rockers James Wolpert, Will Champlin, and Kat Robichaud took the stage to sing Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down.” It was an excellent performance from all three great vocalists, and all three contestants played guitar and rocked out like real pros. Though it’s always interesting to hear a performance of the song and understand the actual words after years of hearing Patrick Stump’s notorious weird pronunciations.

Blake Shelton’s team of sharp-dressed men (Cole Vosbury, Ray Boudreaux, and Austin Jenckes) teamed up with their coach to perform ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man.” It was a fun song, and a great choice for these charismatic vocalists. All four men were dressed quite sharply for the performance, and seemed to have a great time performing the classic song.

The unconventional pairing of Tessanne Chin and Caroline Pennell took the stage together for a performance of Lorde’s hit “Royals”, and they actually sounded outstanding. Their voices blended beautifully, and suited the song perfectly. It was a unique performance that brought out the best in both unique performers. And while one would think Tessanne’s powerful voice would overpower Caroline’s sweeter tone, but their paired perfectly, and it made for a great duet.

‘The Voice’ Confessional

This week’s The Voice Confessional had the contestants, coaches, and advisors talking about their most embarrassing moments. Mostly it was just a lot of people falling down, with a side of eating other people’s food, wearing eye patches, singing telegrams, and talking about periods. Christina Aguilera suggested that you just google her most embarrassing moment, though it might have a little something to do with her beautiful tribute to Etta James gone awry.

The Voice top eight contestants perform next Monday at 8 p.m., with the elimination results revealed Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NBC.
