Tonight’s results show was even worse than usual, as three contestants were sent home, and the first coach of the season was eliminated.

As we approach season 7’s semi-finals, the eliminations are getting tougher and tougher. We lost three talented contestants tonight, but on the plus side, we were treated to some great performances.

Guest Performances

Christina Grimmie

Team Adam’s season 6 contestant Christina Grimmie was first up, opening the show with her new single “With Love,” off of her album of the same name. The performance was not exactly what we knew and loved from Christina’s earlier performances; it was a little more R&B at times, and a little more dramatic. The song seemed like a cross between Evanescence and Ashanti. The important part is that Christina’s still got a great big voice, coming from somewhere in that little tiny body. Here’s hoping she finds success after The Voice.

RaeLynn

Season 2’s RaeLynn from Team Blake was back to perform her hit, “God Made Girls.” Though the subject matter has stirred some controversy, there’s no arguing that this is the perfect song for RaeLynn. It suits her sweet lilting voice perfectly, and the sweet, childish lyrics suit her image. You can practically hear her smiling throughout the song. Plus, she kind of looks like a baby Kellie Pickler. It was a good performance, though her big black butt train was a little distracting.

The Results

After America’s votes were revealed, we learned that our bottom four contestants were Team Pharrell’s DaNica Shirey and Luke Wade, Team Gwen’s Ryan Sill, and Team Adam’s Chris Jamison. Each contestant now had the chance to sing one more time in an attempt to win America’s votes with the Instant Save.

DaNica Shirey

DaNica Shirey, come on now. She has one of the best voices we’ve ever seen on The Voice, and her effortlessly perfect performance of the Etta James classic “I’d Rather Go Blind” was just another example of what an incredible performer she is.

Luke Wade

Luke Wade chose Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” for his last chance performance, as a thank you to all of his fans. It seemed like he had already decided that this was his swan song, and therefore didn’t put a whole lot of effort or feeling into the performance. You’d think he’d want to go out with a bang, especially since he still had a chance to be saved, but apparently not.

Ryan Sill

Ryan Sill is no stranger to being in the bottom, as this is his third week in a row. This week, he chose Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” for his maybe-not-last-chance performance, his voice once again sounded great, as it does every week. The song was a better fit for the boy band wannabe, but would the viewers like it enough to give him another last-minute save?

Chris Jamison

And boom goes the dynamite. Chris Jamison has chosen some sexy songs this week, following up last night’s “Sexual Healing” with the Ray Charles classic “Georgia On My Mind.” Chris has certainly found his niche, and “Georgia” was another perfect fit for his classic R&B sound. He certainly gave it his all, doing everything he could to earn himself that Instant Save.

Instant Save

America had five minutes to vote to save their favorite endangered contestant. When the show went to commercial after the polls were opened, the results were shown as they came in, on the bottom of the screen. Chris was well in the lead for the entire time, followed by DaNica, with Luke and Ryan in the weeds. When the Instant Save window was closed, Carson revealed that Chris would be moving on to the top 5, and DaNica, Luke, and Ryan are going home. This means that Pharrell has been eliminated from the competition.

The top 5 performs next Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC, with the results airing live on Tuesday.
