The Voice took a turn toward democracy in its first live episode of the season appropriately airing on Election Week. We rank the best performances of the night in our Live Playoffs Part 1 recap.

After Blind Auditions, Battle Rounds with steals and the Knockouts, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton’s teams were up first vying for three spots on each team. But not before jointly performing Boston’s “Peace of Mind.”

Once the individual performances began, however, it was hard to pick a loser as all 10 contestants delivered.

Team Adam

1. Amanda Brown

The former backup vocalist stolen from Team Cee Lo surprised yet again by choosing Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” She killed the vocals and had fun doing it (with Adam air drumming from his chair).

2. Bryan Keith

New York crooner Bryan Keith got some of the loudest cheers from the crowd with his passionate take on the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.” It’s hard not to love Bryan’s voice, though we’re still waiting for it to bring out the goosebumps.

3. Melanie Martinez

The New York high schooler found her sassiness for Ray Charles’ “Hit The Road Jack.” Making the song her own, Melanie got praise from Blake and Adam, but Christina seemed to struggle to give her positive feedback because she’s “married to the original.”

4. Joselyn Rivera

The 17-year-old Floridian, who Adam stole from Team Xtina during the Battle Rounds, took on Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart A Break.” Punching the air accenting the drums (awkwardly at times), Joselyn entertained the crowd and showed voice control as she moved around the big stage.

5. Loren Allred

“Most Improved” singer Loren Allred showed off her sultry side with “All Around The World” by Lisa Stansfield. She got through the blinds, battles and knockouts without much hype, but the wedding singer has killer vocals.

Team Blake

1. Cassadee Pope

Former Hey Monday lead Cassadee Pope showed off her pop rock vocals with Avril Lavigne’s “My Happy Ending.” Hitting some beautiful high notes, Cassadee may have improved on the classic Avril song.

2. Michaela Paige

Blake’s young rocker took on Neon Trees’ “Everybody Talks” multi-colored mohawk and all. Cee Lo, Blake and Adam (although Adam changed his mind later) called it the best performance of the night with good reason. Girl rocked the stage, the attitude and the vocals.

3. Terry McDermott

The Scottish rocker sang Journey’s ever-popular “Don’t Stop Believin'” and slayed it as he has classic rock songs throughout the competition. As Blake put it, “When God was passing out the ability to rock, he gave Terry just a little bit more.”

4. Liz Davis

As the only country artist left on season 3 of The Voice, the “country as mud” singer took on Martina McBride’s “Independence Day.” Will uniting the country vote work out for Liz? We’ll soon find out!

5. Julio Cesar Castillo

The Chicago Mariachi singer returned to his roots, after taking on the Biebz last week, with his second full song in Spanish – “El Rey.” He got the first standing ovation of the night after delivering a strong emotional performance.

While the presidential election will take over Tuesday night programming, The Voice returns with live performances from Teams Cee Lo and Christina on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on NBC. The live results show on Thursday, Nov. 8 will see the return of last year’s winner Jermaine Paul and Maroon 5’s debut of its new single, “Daylight.”

Viewers can vote for their two favorite contestants per team by purchasing an artist’s song on iTunes, on Facebook, by phone or text message (Sprint users) or on NBC.com until 10 a.m. ET Tuesday. Each coach will then save one more contestant, taking three artists on to the next round.

Once the Top 12 perform next week, however, the two artists with the lowest votes, no matter what team they are on, will be eliminated, as per a new rule change that doesn’t guarantee each team will be represented in the finals.
