Season 4’s coaches filled up their rosters with the last of the blind auditions this week, but not without their usual hilarious arguments. We met a few more big voices to look forward to this season, and got a sneak peek at next week’s battle rounds.

Early Favorites

30-year-old New Yorker Sasha Allen took a break from the music scene to play mom to her two kids, but now she’s ready to get back to what she loves. Her performance of The Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready To Make Nice” got all four coaches to turn their chairs, and as is usually the case when all four coaches battle it out, Sasha chose Team Adam. It may have helped that he told her she had a “God-given gift” that he wanted to be a part of.

Memphis native Grace Askew considers herself a “bluntry” artist: part blues, part country. She certainly looked the part, with the help of her Priscilla Presley hairstyle, as she sang the Nancy Sinatra classic “These Boots are Made for Walkin’.” Blake and Shakira both turned their chairs, but Blake was so passionate about her performance that Shakira hardly got a chance to speak. Needless to say, Grace chose Team Blake.

Ryan Innes left a career in medicine to pursue music, and since then he’s been doing anything he could to make a living making music. John Mayer’s “Gravity” proved to be the perfect song for Ryan’s soulful voice. All four judges turned their chairs, but Adam and Usher really fought hard for him. Citing his desire to stick with soul music, he chose Usher, who finally beat out Four-Chair-Turnaround King Adam!

Former ballerina Jacqui Sandell has been in a band for years, but is starting to worry that it’s become too much of a security blanket. She’s ready to step outside of her comfort zone, and fortunately, the band is very supportive of her going solo. Her performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” showed many different notes in her voice: rock, blues, R&B, country. Usher and Blake fought for her, but Blake won, filling the last opening on his team.

After singing in church groups as a kid, Luke Edgemon came out to LA and immediately hit the ground running as a backup singer (And a Warbler!). He chose Bonnie Raitt’s bluesy “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” to showcase his phenomenal voice. Usher and Shakira fought it out, Shakira even hoisting her leg up around her then-pregnant belly to mimic Usher’s signature laid-back pose. Luke chose to become the last member of Team Shakira.

By the time Jessica Childress took the stage, Usher was the only coach left with an available spot on his team. She needed him to turn his chair to justify her decision to leave a career in public relations to pursue music. Usher was won over as soon as she started her performance of Bruno Mars’ “Marry Me,” hyping up the crowd to cheer her on, and giving her a standing ovation before he even hit his button and turned his chair.

Shakira’s not the only one making fun of what’s become Usher’s signature pose: #UshersLeg was trending on Twitter Tuesday night, with fans doing their best imitations.

Next week on The Voice the contestants enter the battle rounds, where the coaches pit teammates against one another, and then choose between them, therby cutting their teams in half. However, last season’s addition of the coach’s save adds to the excitement of this round. Some coaches already have their eye on contestants they lost out on in the blind auditions, so it’ll be interesting to see them duke it out once again.

Each coach will have some help from some familiar faces to prepare their team members for the battle rounds. Sheryl Crow will be joining Blake, Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott will help Adam (Perhaps to further his goal of beating Blake this season with a country contestant of his own?), Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden will join Shakira, and Pharrell Williams will help out Usher.

Judging by the quick look we saw of next week’s battle round rehearsals, Shakira and Usher are taking their coaching jobs very seriously. Just because they’re the new kids on the block, doesn’t mean their team members are going to get off easy. It’s good to see the coaches so invested and passionate about helping these rising stars, rather than just using The Voice to promote their latest records.

Which coach do you think has the best team after the blind auditions? Are you excited for the battle rounds to start next week?
