With only a few episodes of The Vampire Diaries left, everyone’s fair game. Which main character will be the next to go?
The Vampire Diaries has always featured plenty of character deaths, but there’s still been a handful of characters who’ve always felt invincible. For most of the series, we’ve been able to rest easy knowing that, even if one of these beloved characters did die, they’d likely be resurrected.
Now that the series is coming to an end, that’s all changed. It began with the shockingly sudden death of Tyler Lockwood (who, granted, could still return with the hell storyline), but he surely won’t be the last main character to bite the dust.
So, the question is, which of these seemingly indispensable characters will become, well, dispensable? Who will shed their protagonist armor leading up to the end of The Vampire Diaries? Let us know what you think in the poll, but first, let’s take a look at the options!
Alaric Saltzman
Alaric’s life has already been marred by so much tragedy. Every woman he’s loved has perished, he accidentally became a psychopathic murderer, he finally accepted his own death only to be turned into an original vampire, and finally, he died (until he was resurrected, of course).
Now that Alaric has Josie and Lizzie, and, in some sense, Caroline by his side, he finally has some light in his life. It would be beyond tragic to take his life away just as he’s found something to live for! Could it happen, though? We’re thinking yes.
Alaric is human, so it’s probable that he won’t make it to the finale, anyway, given that there’ll probably be a large time jump. If he does die an untimely death, we can imagine a heartbreaking future where Caroline and Stefan are raising the girls together and reminding them about their father.
Bonnie Bennett
Since Bonnie’s life is still tied to Elena’s, her death is almost inevitable. That is, of course, unless she becomes a vampire. Given the link between the girls, it’s likely that the end of Bonnie’s human life will occur at the very end of the series, causing Elena to wake up. Therefore, the only question for Bonnie is, will she die or become a vampire? For more on that, click here!
Caroline Forbes
As the mother of Josie and Lizzie, the fiance of Stefan, and the best friend of Bonnie, Elena and Matt, Caroline has more ties than any other character in The Vampire Diaries. Whether that makes her more or less likely to die, we can’t quite decide. So we’ll leave it up to you!
Damon Salvatore
If Damon keeps causing problems like he has been all season okay…for the entire series, it may not be long before someone can’t help but rip his heart out. Salvatore and co. spend a lot of time playing the “save Damon” game, but if he doesn’t soon decide that he wants to be saved, we could see a Damon-less series finale.
That being said, while Caroline may have the most ties to other characters, Damon’s brotherly bond to Stefan and his relationship with Elena seem inseverable. Damon’s death would result in so much grief for Stefan, Elena, and even Bonnie, that we can’t see the series ending with no time to explore that loss.
Elena Gilbert
Elena has always had the thickest protagonist armor of any character in The Vampire Diaries. Come on, the actress decided to leave the show and they still wouldn’t kill her! Even though she’s currently extremely vulnerable in her sleeping state, we still wouldn’t bet on her being one of the casualties of the final season.
Enzo St. John
Of all the characters on this list, Enzo’s the only one who hasn’t been around since the beginning of The Vampire Diaries. That, combined with the fact that fans have generally struggled to care about him, seems to make him the most disposable character.
However, Enzo’s one potential saving grace is his relationship with Bonnie. Fans of The Vampire Diaries have always had a deep desire to see Bonnie Bennett attain happiness, and she finally has with Enzo! It would be cruel to rip him away from her so soon, but unfortunately, we could still see it happening.
Matt Donovan
Seriously, how is Matt Donovan still living? As with Alaric, his human status means that we almost definitely won’t be seeing Matt in the series finale. He’s made it this far without becoming a vampire, and we really can’t see that changing in The Vampire Diaries season 8.
Matt did just reunite with his father, but other than that, he still doesn’t have a lot going for him. He killed his fiance, and one of his best friends was just murdered. Even though he maintains strong bonds with Caroline and Bonnie, Matt’s death would probably have the least impact of the characters on this list. Unfortunately, we’re betting that Matty Blue Eyes will meet a tragic end at some point in season 8.
Stefan Salvatore
The other half of the unbreakable Salvatore brother bond. Even though Stefan is a martyr at his core, and will almost definitely sacrifice himself for Damon at least one more time in The Vampire Diaries season 8, we can’t see the show ending with Stefan’s death. The loss of Stefan would surely send Damon on a downward spiral that, frankly, the show just doesn’t have enough time for!
