The Vampire Diaries is spicing up Elena’s wardrobe now that she has become a vampire, and you can expect a much more grown-up look in season 4.

EW has released an exclusive video clip, in which The Vampire Diaries costume designer Leigh Leverett shows off Elena’s new costumes.

In the video, Leverett explains that, “We’re giving her a slightly more sophisticated look” in season 4.

Where Elena has previously been wearing jeans and a t-shirt when not dressing up for one of Mystic Falls’ (numerous) fancy occasions, she’ll be switching to more dresses and boots, as well as more jewellery.

“She had to wear the Vervain necklace before, so she didn’t get to wear a lot of good fun jewelry,” Leverett says. Now, Elena will have more chances to experiment, something which Nina Dobrev is excited about “because she loves jewelry.”

Elena’s new change in style of course not only symbolises that she has transitioned from a human into a vampire, but also from a child into an adult. This is the season where the characters will graduate from high school, and we can expect Elena to be trying to act more adult, being Jeremy’s only remaining guardian and possibly even going to college.
