Yesterday afternoon, The Vampire Diaries principle cast took the stage in San Diego to have a quick chat with fans at Comic-Con about season 5 and their characters.

While there were no huge announcements, when the cast of The Vampire Diaries gets together it’s basically always a party, and today was no different.

Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev, Kat Graham, Candice Accola, Julie Plec, and Caroline Dries took the stage and gave us all a very entertaining panel to watch as they made fun of each other and teased as any proper family would.

Before the discussion began we saw a trailer beginning with a montage of Stefan and Elena’s greatest moments throughout the first four seasons, ending with the breakup scene from “We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes,” and it then morphed into all of the greatest Damon and Elena moments from across the 4 seasons, culminating in the final love declaration scene from the season 4 finale.

As far as details for season 5, we did get a few small tidbits to add to our ever growing list of clues.

Paul Wesley gave the quote of the night when he declared that he was glad he didn’t get the girl because he was glad to be evil again, which he then backtracked to tell Nina that of course he loves her. Paul said, “I love being evil, but I love you too.”

We found out a few key details about Katherine and her new human status. Katherine will begin season 5 seriously missing her vampirism, particularly the ability to compel her every desire. She also will get her first cold in 500 or so years, and she cannot believe that she must endure the agony of green phlegm again.

They then went on to talk about why the characters are going to college and Paul Wesley chimes in with, “Why are we pursuing higher education, we’re murderers!” to tumultuous laughter. Nina wanted to know what their majors are, and Julie Plec ends the conversation with the sweeping declaration that they can compel whatever they want, so they won’t have any real college worries.

Mid-panel, Ian Somerhalder interrupts to show us all the articficial blood still on his wrist from shooting early this morning, showing just how dedicated this cast is. They quite literally finished shooting, jumped on a plane, and showed up in San Diego to be there to talk to us all.

We also got confirmation as to how they will explain away the Jeremy issue, as Julie tells us that it quite literally will be fixed in the first scene as Elena rehearses his cover story of him faking his death, burning down the house, and running away from home. It may seem a little unbelievable, but in Mystic Falls, just about anything is possible.

The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres Thursday, October 10th with new episodes.
