After last night, many Stefan/Elena fans might be getting a little nervous. Because even though they had a beautiful moment, it looks like Stefan is headed for the point of no return, and there’s nothing to stop him. But what does Paul Wesley think? (Beware of mild spoilers.)

Talking to EW, Wesley reveals that Elena and Stefan will be apart for “a while.” He continues:

I hate to be cheesy, but on a symbolic level, he’s really apart from everybody. He’s physically apart for a while, in a different location, but he’s in a completely different space. He and Elena were just not what they were. It could go on indefinitely, man, for sure.

On that note, look for an episode where Stefan is “basically saying goodbye to my old self,” where we see a side we’ve never seen before. Could it be worse than what we’ve already seen?!

Wesley also talks about whether Stefan will eventually forget about Elena:

I think at a certain point, he thinks he has. Whether or not he truly has is left to be seen to me. I think he thinks he has to because he forces himself to [forget her], and circumstances force it, too. Genuinely, they force him to.

Oh no! But surely, the core relationship of the series will eventually find its way back together… right? What do you think? Do you even want them to, or do you think that Elena is better off without Stefan?
