The Vampire Diaries is back tomorrow with the season 4 premiere! Watch an interview with Daniel Gillies (Elijah) in which he previews his return.

Associated Press caught up with Gillies to discuss the upcoming fourth season of The Vampire Diaries, and preview Elijah’s return.

Gillies says of Elijah that, “There’s something of a perfectionist in him, and I think that he comes back in order to sort of be the sheriff, in a sense, and to sort of reel Klaus in.”

He also reveals that when season 4 of The Vampire Diaries begins, Elijah won’t be around. But, “as long as there’s tyranny from Klaus, he’ll always return.”

Finally, Gillies comments on the fact that Elena is becoming a vampire, noting that in the L.J. Smith books, she actually transitions early on in the series. So “it wasn’t a sacrilege” against the source material, and he is not surprised that the writers made it happen. “It opens up all these other wonderful doors,” he explains.

Are you looking forward to Elijah coming back in season 4? And how will his interaction with Elena and the others be different now that she is a vampire?

The Vampire Diaries is finally back tomorrow, at 8/7c on The CW! The first episode “Growing Pains” will see Elena, Bonnie, Stefan and Jeremy doing everything in their power to stop Elena from becoming a vampire – but will they succeed?
