The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals is expanding its cast of characters, and Danielle Campbell’s innocent yet dangerous witch Davina is the latest addition.

The Originals is the planned spinoff series of The Vampire Diaries which will focus on Klaus (Joseph Morgan) as he leaves Mystic Falls for the French Quarter of New Orleans. There, he’ll meet his old protege Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), who is now the leader of the supernatural community there.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Campbell (Prison Break) has been cast as one of the show’s witches; Davina is young and troubled, and has been sheltered for most of her life. Therefore, she is very innocent and delicate – but her naivety and inexperience also makes her dangerous.

Campbell joins an already quite extensive list of actors signed on for The Originals. Daniel Gillies will reprise his role as Elijah while Phoebe Tonkin’s Hayley will also cross over from The Vampire Diaries. New talent includes Daniella Pineda, who will be playing the witch Sophie, and we’re still waiting for the casting announcement for Klaus’ rumoured love interest Cami.

The episode of The Vampire Diaries airing April 25 will serve as The Originals‘ backdoor pilot, introducing all of these characters and setting the stage for what will hopefully be an entirely new series. We won’t know for a while yet whether The CW decides to pick it up for a full season though, but hopefully this episode will bring in enough viewers to warrant the show’s continuation.

If The Originals is picked up, The Vampire Diaries exec Julie Plec will serve as the series’ showrunner.
