In The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 3, “Age of Innocence,” everyone realizes Alaric never destroyed the phoenix stone and they make plans to change that.

Last week on ‘The Vampire Diaries’

After dealing with the consequences of killing one of Lily’s heretics, Damon was forced to live outside of Mystic Falls forever if he ever hoped to see/find Elena again. Unhappy with this outcome, he makes a decision to find the sixth heretic that Lily had raised with her in the 1903 prison world and threaten his life to get Lily to do what he wants.

Meanwhile, Alaric realized that the phoenix stone he possessed really does raise the dead and now everyone is concerned about whether he’s going to use it or not because according to Bonnie and several other witches, that stone is filled with some insanely dark magic.

This week everyone is after the phoenix stone. Well… almost everyone.

The synopsis for this week’s episode reads, “In the aftermath of a clever plan orchestrated by Lily, Damon sets off on a road trip with Bonnie and Alaric in search of leverage they can use against his mother. Meanwhile, Caroline, who is being held hostage by the Heretics, learns some shocking information about Valerie’s past, while Stefan learns a few unexpected details about his own past from Lily. Finally, Alaric turns to Bonnie for her help after coming clean about a secret he’s been keeping.”

It looks like Bonnie, Damon and Alaric’s road trip is going to be fairly straightforward: They find the heretic and Damon unveils the reason why he wanted to go there in the first place, and while they’re dealing with that drama, Alaric decides to come clean to Bonnie about not destroying the stone. What doesn’t seem straightforward is how they’re all going to deal with this insane amount of supernatural drama without anyone actually dying or being raised from the dead.

But the real question here is: Will Damon succeed in killing yet another one of Lily’s family members? We’d ask if the phoenix stone will really be destroyed, but we have a strong suspicion that it won’t be, considering the flash-forwards have hinted toward Jo being the hunter everyone’s freaking out about.

Additionally we have a few awesome stills from the episode that include Bonnie and Damon looking like badasses — as always!

‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7, episode 3 airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern
