The Vampire Diaries sixth season premiere airs tonight and we’ll finally get a look at what’s happening with our favorite supernatural gang in and around Mystic Falls.

Last season on ‘The Vampire Diaries’

A whole lot happened in the town of Mystic Falls, but here’s what you need to remember: Everyone died. No, but really, in last May’s season finale, Damon and Elena blew up the Mystic Grill in a desperate attempt to rid themselves of the Travelers. Their brilliant plan was to return to Bonnie together in plenty of time to cross back over before the Other Side disappeared for good. Elena wakes first and finds her body, but hadn’t located Damon. Alaric promises her that he will find Damon as soon as possible and meet her when she finds Bonnie (aka the Anchor). One by one, the deceased supernaturals find their Anchor and begin returning to the land of the living before the Other Side completely implodes. Elena, Alaric, Tyler, Stefan, and Enzo all make it back in plenty of time, but when Luke forces Liv to stop her spell a little prematurely, that was the only thing allowing them all to pass through so Bonnie and Damon end up stranded on the wrong side of the veil.

Don’t lose all hope though, earlier in the finale, Bonnie’s Grams mentioned that she could find peace because she knew that, although Bonnie wouldn’t survive all those people passing through her, Bonnie would be fine. When the Other Side finally imploded in a blinding white light, Damon and Bonnie were holding hands, giving us hope that whatever Grams arranged to give Bonnie peace, Damon will be right alongside her.

Oh, and the supernaturals still can’t enter Mystic Falls because of the whole ‘no magic’ thing courtesy of the Travelers. When we meet our heroes in season 6, it won’t be anywhere near the town square of the little Virginia town that so many of them called home.

Tonight, we jump forward a few months.

The synopsis for the premiere reads: “After spending the past four months coping with the loss of Damon in an unconventional and potentially dangerous way, Elena has returned to Whitmore College for the start of sophomore year. Unable to move on, Caroline is desperate to find a way to reverse the anti-magic spell the Travelers have put over Mystic Falls and grows frustrated when her calls to Stefan go unanswered. Tyler, who is human once again, has a run-in at a football tailgate that tests his ability to control his anger, while Matt worries that Jeremy is dealing with the loss of Bonnie in a self-destructive way. Alaric, who is struggling to adjust to his new life as a vampire, finds himself in an awkward situation when he meets Jo, a beautiful doctor at the university hospital. Last, while everyone believes Stefan is off tracking a lead to get Damon and Bonnie back, Elena is shocked when she learns the truth of what he has really been up to.”
