The Vampire Diaries season 6, episode 9 aired last night! Check out our recap.

Prison Swap

Alaric has set up dinner with Jo, probably to get the Ascendant from her, but at least it’s romantic. During the dinner she reveals that she ran away from her coven with the ascendant without her knowledge, and that it’s in her underwear drawer alongside her pot. Alaric arrives to Damon and Stefan with the ascendant, and Damon compels him to forget it all happened.

While jogging with Jeremy, Elena finds out Jeremy has finally finished grieving and he’s ready to move on, but she tells him Bonnie is still alive. Elena says Liv is looking for a way to send them over to find Bonnie and bring her back, but Jeremy doesn’t believe any of it.

Speaking of Liv, she’s willing to go off and do the spell despite it meaning she might get caught by her coven and forced to merge with Luke, which would kill one of them. Tyler doesn’t want her to, but of course she has to.

She meets up with Damon and Elena in the woods, and explains that they have about 8 hours to find Bonnie and bring her back, since she’s using the moon for her spell. They have to drink her blood in order to be connected to her (so she can bring her back) and after ensuring they have a vial of it for Bonnie as well they drink and Liv starts the spell using the ascendant and a Bennett witch’s blood. And they’ve transported to 1994.

They show up to the Salvatore mansion and don’t find Bonnie, but do find blood. So Damon decides to page Kai. Bonnie calls the house, for some reason, and reaches Damon and Elena. Bonnie hot wired a car and managed to get from Portland to Indiana, and she has a 6 1/2 hour drive to make before Liv pulls them all out in 7 hours.

Unfortunately for everyone, it looks like Kai has made it back to the present day and is already searching for Jo and ends up at Liv’s bar.

Meanwhile, Jo confronts Alaric about him taking her ascendant but since he was compelled to forget everything he legitimately doesn’t know what’s going on. She realizes Damon probably compelled him, and she wants to go to Mystic Falls. If he was compelled it will go away when he crosses the border.

Back at the bar, Kai orders alcohol which makes Liv ask for ID, and she sees his name and tries to run but he stops her. Luckily Tyler is there and pushes Kai off the second story balcony before taking Liv and running away.

No Hope for Bonnie

While Damon and Elena wait for Bonnie the news comes out that Damon compelled Alaric to steal the Ascendant from Jo, and Elena is pissed and goes to her house. Then Damon admits he’s doing this all for Bonnie, because he grew to love her when they were trapped together. He asks if she wants to go inside her old home and before they get the chance they get pulled back into present day. Liv pulled them back before Kai could take her magic, and she and Tyler go hide in Mystic Falls.

Chillin’ in the graveyard, Damon says as long as they have the ascendant they can go back as many times as they need to get Bonnie but then Kai shows up and throws the ascendant against a tree, breaking it apart. Elena runs to salvage it while Kai then attacks Damon. Kai then lights Elena on fire, but then Damon throws him over the border which gets rid of his magic and the fire.

And then they realize they just let a psycho murderer into Mystic Falls without the ability to follow him. Kai ends up at Tyler’s house, offering him a deal: He wants to save Liv’s life. But how? We’ll have to wait for next week.

Elena calls Jeremy to inform him, and he’s just like us: Predicted Bonnie wouldn’t be back, and he hangs up. And Bonnie shows up to Elena’s house with a half hour to spare only to find that Elena and Damon are not there, resulting in a well deserved emotional breakdown.

Imposter

Matt officially disbanded the Mystic Falls Community Protection Program, and in return Sarah asks to be introduced to the Salvatore brothers since she’s their relative. Matt takes her to the diner to meet them, but Enzo shows up instead of Stefan. Enzo gets, well, Enzo-y, and Stefan shows up to break up his fight with Matt before Sarah interrupts and introduces herself to Stefan as Zach’s daughter.

During lunch Stefan tells Sarah he knows she’s lying and makes her go outside where Enzo won’t be able to listen in, and they go for a drive. She asks why Stefan doesn’t believe her, and he says it’s because Sarah is at Duke university, and he’s been keeping tabs on her ever since she was born. She tries to run away before being stopped and finally admitting her name is Monique.

She explains she met Sarah at sleep-away camp, and because Sarah didn’t want to know her family Monique tried to steal her identity so she could have one. Stefan explains that he kept Sarah a secret because he didn’t want Damon to know she existed, so she could have a normal life. So he asks her to take off her vervain necklace and compels her to forget all about Sarah Salvatore and never come back to Mystic Falls.

However, Enzo shows up and gets Monique in a choke hold, threatening Stefan that he’ll kill her if he doesn’t tell him what he’s hiding. Stefan doesn’t budge, so Enzo kills Monique.

Upset about her death, Matt tells Stefan that he’s just like Enzo because human lives will always matter less to vampires, and he hates it. He then drive over to Jeremy’s, and asks for his help to go hunt Enzo down.
