Tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries was an emotional roller coaster of rage and sadness as we say goodbye to not just one, but two of our favorite characters.

Steroline Forever

Caroline and Stefan head over to Caroline’s family cabin to get it ready for Sheriff Forbes to spend the rest her days. Stefan starts fixing the place up and Caroline says he doesn’t have to do stuff like that, but he says he doesn’t have anywhere else he’d rather be. Adorable.

Caroline being Caroline stresses over what could be her mother’s last literary experience when she’s placing books by her bed.

After all the stress of setting the house up, Stefan tells Caroline that none of that stuff matters, and that he’s there for her no matter what. He says that when she said she hated him it was one of the worst things he’s heard, and she goes, “I think we both know I never hated you,” and they kiss. They kiss so, so slowly that it rips our heart out and destroys it with feels.

Goodbye, Sheriff

Sheriff Forbes remembers the day she was working in the precinct when Elena and her parents were rushed in after their accident. She remembers that the case is still open, pending more information, so she decides to get help on it before she passes away.

Damon shows up to her office and helps her close some of her open cases, the majority of which were actually him. She then hands him Elena’s parents’ case and he promises he wasn’t involved at all. Afterwards she plays Damon a message that Elena’s mother left her two hours before she died: Miranda Gilbert saying she has something urgent for Sheriff Forbes.

Forbes asks Damon why both he and Stefan were in town the night Elena’s parents died, and he says that when his emotion switch was on he would visit the town on the day his mother died to lay flowers on her grave. He then points out everything that was odd about the accident: There were no skid marks on the road, the trunk was filled with luggage as if they were leaving town, and the bridge they took was 10 minutes out of their way.

Damon asks Elena to come by and she says she doesn’t remember anything odd about that night, so she tells Forbes that she’ll see if Jeremy remembers anything. He does. He says he used to smoke pot in his room and that night their mom caught him, so she called the Sheriff as a joke to freak Jeremy out.

They then realize that there was was a storm the day before, and it was getting so bad that Elena’s parents loaded up the car so they could wait it out at their cabin. And because of the storm, a power line fell on Old Mill road, which is why they took the bridge out of town. And the reason there were no skid marks was because the roads were still slick.

Forbes says the mystery is solved and she places her badge on her desk as she leaves for the last time. She gets home and in bed, and Damon is with her when she confesses she wishes it wasn’t just an accident that killed Elena’s parents — she wanted someone to blame.

She’s happy that she’s having an ordinary death, out of all the weird deaths that happen in Mystic Falls, and she also states that she always knew Caroline would be extraordinary and she wants someone to tell her just how extraordinary she is. Damon says that she’ll tell her herself, despite her looking so, so sick.

Damon says he never got to spend time with his mom before she died, and he volunteered to write the eulogy, but when she died he didn’t go to the funeral. Offering him a second chance, Sheriff Forbes tells Damon he can write hers as long as there’s nothing dirty in it.

She falls asleep when Damon gets up to grab her a drink and she gets worse, so Damon rushes her to the hospital where Caroline meets up with them and sees her sleeping in the hospital bed, unable to tell her mom goodbye. She’s sad that she wasn’t able to be with her in her final moment, and then Stefan says she still can.

Stefan teaches Caroline how to put herself into her mother’s memories, and she sees the day she learned how to ride her bike before she passes away.

The Biggest Con Ever

Jeremy begins his art school going away party with Matt and Alaric at the Mystic Grill when Enzo calls and informs him he sent Sarah over. She shows up during the phone call and explains to Matt that the “owner” of the bar called so she could take photos for the website.

Damon shows up to the party and gives Jeremy a parting gift: his graduation cap (because he helped compel the principal to let him graduate early) and a joint. Later in the episode Elena finds out about the joint, but instead of confiscating it she chooses to smoke it with him, and they bond over their high.

After the events of the day, Jeremy says he shouldn’t leave since Sheriff Forbes is getting worse and Enzo is being crazy, but Elena insists that now is the right time. She wants to take him to the airport, but Alaric insists on doing it so she can be with Sheriff Forbes.

Alaric does take Jeremy somewhere, but it’s not the airport. Instead, it’s a bus stop. Turns out Jeremy is actually going to be hunting vampires in a small town 30 minutes away from Santa Fe, and Alaric helped him fool everyone into thinking he’s really going to art school. Alaric says Jeremy will be the first person he calls if Bonnie ever actually comes back, and with that he boards a bus going out of town.

Road Rage

Elena leaves her bonding time with Jeremy to meet Damon, and when she does, the ever-so-elusive Enzo arrives, confronting Jeremy. He uses Jeremy as leverage to get Matt to bring Sarah to a creepy tunnel off the highway. At the tunnel Matt brings Sarah, but when he arrives, Enzo decides to surprise him by running him over with his car.

Matt is basically dying from the injuries when Enzo arrives saying he “was just walking by,” and offers his help. He then tells Sarah to remain calm as he feeds Matt his blood and heals him, totally freaking her out. He runs away before she can realize what’s going on, and the episode leaves us wondering what happens after that moment.
