The Vampire Diaries season 5 finally premieres this week! To celebrate, Hypable has put together a top 5 list of things we want to see this year.

For fans of The Vampire Diaries, it has been a very long summer, as we sat around waiting for season 5 to premiere.

(Beaches? Holidays? Nope. We literally just sat still in a dark room for four months, waiting for The Vampire Diaries.)

But for the actual characters on the show, summer has literally passed by in the blink of an eye – when season 5, episode 1 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” opens, Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) are getting ready to start college!

Thinking that Stefan (Paul Wesley) is off seeing the world, Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) have settled into happy coupledom, while Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) has settled back into the land of the living.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) is still dead, but still hanging around, while poor Stefan remains trapped under the lake with Silas impersonating him.

So much has changed since The Vampire Diaries season 4, and we can’t wait to see how all the new developments will affect the characters moving forward.

With that in mind, we have put together a list of five things we hope to see in season 5:

5. A bit of happiness for Damon and Elena

…Before it all, inevitably, goes to hell.

After years of dancing around each other, we were happy to finally see Damon get the girl in The Vampire Diaries season 4 finale.

And when season 5 opens, the pair is still happy and in love. But how long is that really going to last?

Elena will continue to flip-flop between the brothers until the end of time (and/or the series), and Nina Dobrev has recently spoken about how Elena’s deep connection to Stefan will become very significant in the early part of the season.

Since Elena and Stefan are both doppelgangers, they might be even more connected than we thought – and where will that leave Damon? We just hope that if the writers plan to break up Damon and Elena this year, their ship will sail for at least the first half of the season!

4. An abundance of Katherine(s)

All punning aside, The Vampire Diaries has created a very interesting situation by reversing Elena and Katherine’s positions on the show.

Elena is a vampire and Katherine is human, and this changes everything. Especially now that Silas has his eye on Katherine!

And yes, we know that Nina Dobrev is only one person and can’t actually play two main characters at the same time, but we hope that Katherine sticks around for a while so we can see how she adapts to her new fragile state.

Unless of course Silas kills her in the first episode, and then we’ll be pretty bummed out.

3. Lots of ‘The Originals’ crossovers

We know Julie Plec has already promised that there will be crossovers between The Originals and The Vampire Diaries, but we still don’t know how substantial they will be.

While we want The Originals to be its own show, and know that there will be plenty of original (ha ha) material to look forward to, Klaus and the others departed Mystic Falls with so many storylines left open-ended.

Of course the main link is between Klaus and Caroline, who left things on a hopeful note at the end of season 4 (with Klaus telling Caroline that he intends to be her last love).

Will The Vampire Diaries and The Originals be able to pull off a Buffy and Angel-style crossover episode and give this fan-favourite couple an emotional reunion? We hope so!

2. Good storylines for Tyler, Jeremy and Matt

The Vampire Diaries season 5 seems poised to tell very interesting stories about Elena and Caroline’s move to college, Katherine’s newfound humanity, Silas and Stefan’s Parent Trap escapades and Bonnie’s ghost adventures.

But what about the often sidelined characters Tyler (Michael Trevino), Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen)?

We’re less worried about the latter of the three, seeing as he’ll have plenty of interaction with Bonnie (being the only one who can see her and all). But it still seems like there won’t be much space for exploring Jeremy’s difficult transition from dead to alive.

Matt, meanwhile, is still working at the Grill, and his love interest Rebekah (Claire Holt) has left for New Orleans. We’re sure he’ll always be the other characters’ anchor, but we still can’t help but feel like he needs a story of his own – or perhaps a new girlfriend?

And finally there’s Tyler, who seems totally superfluous now that Klaus has left town and Caroline is allegedly getting a new love interest.

Last year, Tyler’s werewolf pack provided him with a solid story for a few episodes, but then they were all killed off. We hope the writers have a plan for his character this year, either by tying him into the mythology or by giving him a kickass side story.

1. An explanation for the doppelgangers

This is probably the biggest mystery of The Vampire Diaries, and rather than explaining it, the writers keep adding to the mythology surrounding doppelgangers!

At first, Elena was simply a copy of the Salvatore brothers’ dead girlfriend Katherine. Then it turned out they were both copies of the Original brothers’ girlfriend Tatia, and that they were all linked to Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) curse.

But now, it turns out that the Petrovas aren’t the only doppelgangers in town – Stefan is also a copy, this time of an even older line!

With this reveal came so many new questions: have there been other Silas doppelgangers? What is the purpose of Stefan? How does Damon fit in? Are the two doppelganger lines somehow linked? Was Tatia perhaps not the original version after all?

We hope that season 5 is the year when a lot of those questions will be answered – although in some ways we hope that the mythology will just keep opening up and expanding!

The Vampire Diaries season 5, episode 1 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” airs this Thursday, at 8/7c on The CW.
