The Vampire Diaries season 5 returns in the fall, and executive producer Julie Plec now teases new relationships, college plans and more.

Julie Plec recently spoke at the ATX Television Festival, and she had several interesting secrets to share about The Vampire Diaries season 5.

In the season 4 finale, several big developments changed the course of the series: Bonnie died, but Jeremy came back to life. Elena, now sans sire bond, chose Damon. Katherine was turned into a human. And of course, Stefan was revealed to be the doppelganger of Silas, and was then trapped at the bottom of a lake.

Hollywood Life reports from the festival, where Plec reveals that the beginning of the season will explore the Silas/Stefan doppelganger mystery.

Plec says that there will be, “A pretty cool mythology that will carry on in terms of Silas, and the mystery of his past — 1,000 or 2,000 years ago.”

Meanwhile, Damon and Elena will be dealing with their new relationship, and Plec can offer some words of comfort (or are they?) to the Delena shippers, saying that the pair will, “try to make it work.”

As for the newly human Katherine, Plec is looking forward to exploring how she copes with that. “We were just in the room the other day talking about the first time she catches a cold — just how freakin’ pissed she’s going to be about that,” she says.

Finally, Plec addresses the fact that Jeremy has been brought back from the dead, literally, and acknowledges that this is one mystical event which will be hard to explain away.

“What the hell cover story is that going to be?” Plec asks. “How’s he going to explain that? He had a memorial service! There were flyers!”
