The CW has released a video interview with The Vampire Diaries star Zach Roerig, in which he previews Matt’s role in season 5.

In The Vampire Diaries season 4, we saw Matt and Rebekah (Claire Holt) finally begin a tentative romance, and embark on an epic road trip together.

See what Zach Roerig can reveal about how this storyline will play out:

Roerig says in the video that he’s looking forward to seeing Matt’s relationship with “the hottest vampire on television” continue.

“Matt’s always kind of stuck to his guns when it comes to principles and what he believes in,” he continues, when explaining how he was able to stand up to a powerful vampire like Rebekah.

However, don’t get your hopes up too much, Mebekah shippers. Claire Holt has revealed that the romance probably isn’t long for this world, with Rebekah moving to New Orleans for The Originals.

In the video, Zoerig also discusses the moment where Damon kills Matt to switch Elena’s humanity back on, saying, “It was Matt’s first chance to enter the world of the supernatural. He died and he came back, which was kind of an interesting experience. [And] for me personally, I felt like I was finally part of the gang.”

Who knows what Matt’s role will be in season 5 – we can’t wait to see what the writers have in store for him!

The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres Thursday, October 3 at 8/7c on The CW. The first episode is titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and will jump ahead to when Elena and Caroline start college.
