Actor Shaun Sipos joins The Vampire Diaries season 5 as a college student who may get closer to Elena than Delena and Stelena shippers might like.

E! Online reports that Canadian actor Shaun Sipos, best known for his roles on Melrose Place and Life Unexpected, has landed a recurring role in The Vampire Diaries season 5.

Sipos will play college student Aaron, who bonds with Elena (Nina Dobrev) over their similarly tragic family histories.

Described as Elena’s “new best friend,” the character could potentially continue to recur throughout The Vampire Diaries season 5.

But does he pose a threat to Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Elena’s current boyfriend?

Executive producer Julie Plec is adamant that Elena and Damon will still be going strong when season 5 starts (a few months after the season 4 finale).

In the beginning of the season, we’ll see them struggle with maintaining a long-term relationship, now that Elena and Caroline have started college.

Meanwhile, Stefan (Paul Wesley) is still stuck in his own private hell, trapped at the bottom of the lake while Silas pretends to be him.
