The Vampire Diaries season 5, episode 17, “Rescue Me” airs tonight! Who exactly is leading these pesky Travelers, and what do they have in store for Stefan and/or his doppelganger? Answers are on their way tonight!
Last time on ‘The Vampire Diaries’:
Elena returned to her body following Katherine’s death and found herself spelled into her dorm by Stefan and the newest witch friend to the Mystic Falls crew, Liv. She also discovered that she was suffering from a virus courtesy of Ms. Pierce’s final act of desperation.
Damon spent much of the episode trying to find a way to break the news that he killed Aaron Whitmore to Elena, resulting in him escaping from his cell in the Salvatore mansion to tell Elena in person.
Stefan and Caroline found out that not only is Enzo cooperating with the Travelers, but they have a cure to the Ripper virus infecting Damon and Elena. The catch? They need to use Stefan to find the only other remaining doppelganger. He consents, despite multiple concerns from Caroline, and Sloane hands over two doses of the cure to Enzo, who delivers them to Damon and Elena.
The episode ends with Caroline and Enzo taking off to find the infamous doppelganger (who happens to reside in nearby Atlanta), and Damon and Elena having a little post-breakup sex. That’s not confusing at all.

Synopsis
MARKOS ARRIVES IN MYSTIC FALLS — In order to keep Stefan from being harmed by Sloan (guest star Caitlin McHugh) and the Travelers, Caroline and Enzo agree to make a trip to Atlanta to find a newly discovered doppelganger. Caroline is surprised when Enzo opens up to her about his past. Damon and Elena spend an awkward afternoon at Jeremy’s parent-teacher conference, where they hear bad news about his behavior at school. Afterwards, Damon reluctantly tells Elena upsetting news about Jeremy’s personal life. Bonnie has an unsettling encounter with Luke (guest star Chris Brochu), and learns more about his family history. Liv fills Jeremy in on the rumors about the Travelers’ next move and demonstrates her considerable power. Jeremy makes an unexpected deal with Liv, then makes a decision that is devastating to Elena. Stefan and Caroline share a special moment of friendship. Finally, a terrifying turn of events at the Travelers’ camp leads to the appearance of their mysterious leader, Markos (guest star Raffi Barsoumian).
