Tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries showed Stefan and “Elena” teaming up to help Damon when they discover what exactly Dr. Wes did to him, while Caroline and Tyler try to figure out what is going on with Matt.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, Episode 14 Recap

A new kind of vampire

Enzo and Damon have continued their killing spree even though Damon is now a vampire-blood-craving vampire. They turned a man into a vampire just to provide Damon with a new food source, and to entertain themselves. I think it’s safe to say that Damon officially has a Ripper alter-ego to rival his brother.

Caroline interrupts Elena and Stefan’s study session to show them a stack of animal attack police reports that Stefan immediately attributes to Damon and Enzo’s adventures. When Caroline adds that the bodies are desiccated with the heads removed, Stefan realizes that they are feeding on vampires instead of humans.

Stefan is interested in finding Damon and putting a stop to his and Enzo’s escapades, and Katherine is eager to join him on the road. Tyler calls Caroline, anxious to find out if she has talked to Matt since he found out that Nadia has been compelling their human friend, and Caroline uses the opportunity to impose herself on Tyler in order to push them through the latest phase of their relationship.

Death on the brain

Katherine wants Nadia to kill Matt to ensure her secret stays safe, but Nadia is reluctant to dispatch the last remaining human in the picture.

The Travelers show up at Enzo and Damon’s latest victim’s house, and Dr. Wes informs Damon that he is now trapped in the house with no source of food except for Enzo. He wants Damon to kill his best friend.

Katherine and Stefan stop for gas and she successfully sabotages the car by pulling on a random engine part. After rubbing engine grease all over herself, Katherine does a very poor job of trying to not appear completely transparent while luring to get Stefan to a hotel.

Enzo is worried about their immediate future and wants Damon to call his friends, but Damon refuses because he wants to keep them safe.

Matt and Nadia return to the Lockwood mansion to convince Caroline and Tyler that nothing is wrong so that Nadia does not need to kill Matt per Katherine’s instructions. In order to distract them, Nadia plays the Matt’s-romantic-choices-are-better-than-yours-lately card, which propels Tyler and Caroline into yet another fight.

All chained up with nowhere to go

Enzo discovers a length of chain on the property and binds Damon to the chair in order to keep himself from becoming the next meal. (Is anyone else having Mason Lockwood flashbacks?) Enzo grabs Damon’s phone and calls Stefan for help. Katherine/Elena answers and pretends to care, but as soon as Stefan asks what the call was about, she feigns innocence.

Dr. Wes shoots Enzo in order to make him bleed and attract Damon to the smell of fresh vampire blood. Damon rips through the chains in seconds, showing just how strong he is in his new form. Damon cannot resist and begins feeding on Enzo. The Travelers raise the acidity of Enzo’s blood to stop Damon from killing him, and Enzo leaves with Dr. Wes, leaving Damon behind.

Katherine continues her attempts to get Stefan to pay attention to her by undressing with the bathroom door cracked. Stefan does a stellar job of resisting until she moves in for the kill and plants one on him. Katherine considers it a job well done and sends Stefan out to settle their bill while she calls Nadia and outlines her plan to get Stefan to kill Damon. She thinks that if Stefan is forced to choose between letting Damon feed on Elena (killing her) and stopping Damon from doing just that, there is no doubt Stefan will choose Elena.

Matt starts the ball rolling

After Nadia checks to see if Matt is vervain free, he kisses her, playing it off as something he is just going to forget anyway. He then starts texting his friends while making out with her, begging for help. Nadia compels Matt to forget all that he isn’t supposed to know, then tries to leave. Caroline challenges Nadia, and when Nadia threatens her, Tyler jumps in between them to save Caroline.

“Elena” and Stefan show up at Damon’s location, and he begs them not to enter the premises. He is worried that one of them will be his next meal if they break the boundary spell. Katherine steps into the house and Damon immediately begins trying to force her out, but he can’t, no matter how hard he tries. Stefan then also breaks the boundary. Katherine cuts her arm to tempt Damon into feeding on her, doing everything in her power to get him to give in to temptation. Rather than letting him kill her, Stefan cuts his own arm open to give Damon another food source, and snaps his neck to stop the carnage.

Tyler tells Caroline that he doesn’t see friendship in the cards for them, because he can’t see how it is possible for him to get over her sleeping with the man that killed his mother.

Stefan brings Damon back to the Salvatore mansion and locks him in the infamous basement cell to keep him under control until he can convince Damon to not give up. Damon points out to Stefan that “Elena” has completely given up on him. He reminds Stefan that “Elena” would have done anything to avoid having to stake Jesse back at Whitmore College, but when Damon was feeding on her, she kicked Stefan a stake to try and suggest that killing his brother was his only option to save her.

Katherine and Nadia meet up for a little bonding time, and Katherine is happy even though Stefan didn’t kill Damon. Nadia then breaks it to her mother that Tyler bit her, and she is now dying from werewolf venom.

Eureka!
Back at the Salvatore mansion, Caroline is drowning her sorrows in booze, and she shares the text that Matt sent her with Stefan. The text read, “Help, K.” Stefan then begins regaling Caroline with the strange details of his and “Elena’s” road trip. They cannot figure out why Elena has been acting weirdly until Stefan puts the pieces together and suggests that maybe Katherine has taken up residence in Elena’s body. The episode ends without them solidifying the point, but they are definitely onto Katherine’s game. Congrats, Matt! Your text worked!
