The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder shares some must-read information about Damon and Elena’s relationship in season 5.

When The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres in October, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) will have been together for a couple of months, and are facing a very real problem: can their relationship survive now that Elena is off to college?

Speaking to TV Guide about the fan-favourite pairing, Ian Somerhalder gives a bit of insight into Damon’s feelings about this new situation.

“You don’t send your girl off to college who really needs a break from your hometown, and tell her ‘I need you back here,'” he says. “You’re going to say, ‘Go! As much as I want you here and as much as I want to spend time with you, you’ve got to go live your life.'”

But don’t get too comfortable, Delena shippers – Somerhalder also emphasises that Elena’s bond to Stefan (Paul Wesley) will continue to factor into the equation.

Somerhalder explains, “The beautiful thing about Elena is that she is so dialed into Stefan.” He further teases that there might be more to the connection they share.

“She and Stefan particularly have this bond, and we later figure out in the mythology of the story why that is,” he says. “But her having this feeling is genuine.”

The CW has also released a video interview with Somerhalder, in which he shares some further thoughts on the Damon/Elena dynamic:

The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres Thursday, October 3 at 8/7c on The CW.
