In the penultimate episode of The Vampire Diaries season 4, Elena struggled with her newfound humanity. But she didn’t have long to adjust, because Bonnie moved ahead with her plan to bring down the veil!

Now, Silas has been turned back into stone and the ghosts are back – including Alaric, Kol, Jeremy and Lexi – but rather than putting the veil back up at the end of the episode and letting the living move on after saying goodbye, Bonnie tried to use her magic to bring Jeremy back permanently.

Tragically, this was too much for her, and the episode ended with her waking up, only to find herself looking down at her own dead body. Is she gone for good? Or will there be a way to bring her back?

Only the season 4 finale remains, titled “Graduation.” Check out the promo for the episode:

In “Graduation,” expect lots of drama following the return of the ghosts – but also an actual graduation!

Speaking to EW, executive producer previews the finale, saying, “We approached this episode, in its own way, like a series finale because our character’s graduating from high school is a shift in the show.”

From this point on, she explains, “we move on to a different life.”

Plec adds, in an interview with ET Online, that their plans to wrap up the Klaus/Caroline and Matt/Rebekah romances before The Originals spinoff begins are, “Very, very simple and, I think, satisfying. I’m sure there are lots of people who would like to see more, but it’s satisfying and very enjoyable.”

Finally, she previews the big season-ending cliffhanger, saying, “It’s a double whammy cliffhanger, and this is, from an emotional point of view, one of my favorite finales we’ve done. Bold and potentially devastating.”

We can’t wait!

The Vampire Diaries season 4 finale “Graduation” airs next Thursday at 8/7c on The CW!
