After the backdoor pilot of The Originals spinoff last week, we’re back in Mystic Falls – and this was a very dark, Elena-centric episode. Damon and Stefan try endless types of torture on Elena in order to bring her humanity back. Each attempt leads Elena to spew horrible hateful things at the boys.
At one point while the boys are torturing her with sunlight, Elena decides to call their bluff and throws herself in full sunlight. Elena knows that the boys won’t do anything to truly hurt her.
The boys decide that they aren’t making any progress and the only way to truly scare Elena is to find someone that will actually harm her. They bring in Katherine, who decides to let Elena go.
This is where things get interesting, as Damon concocts a plan to turn Elena’s humanity back on using Matt. Damon snaps Matt’s neck in order to prove a point but never fear Matt had on Jeremy’s ring. The plan works and Elena feels again but the road ahead seems painful for her.
Throughout the episode Caroline is haunted by Silas in various forms, including Klaus. Silas is searching for Bonnie who seems to have a plan of her own. In the end Caroline’s mom is killed by Silas and then resurrected by Caroline.

Next week, it’s the penultimate episode of the season, can you believe it?! The cheekily titled “The Walking Dead” looks like it’ll see dead characters returning to Mystic Falls, and we imagine that this will have very emotional consequences for a number of the main characters.

As Graduation Day approaches, Caroline tries to distract Elena by focusing on simple tasks like sending out announcements, but Elena won’t be swayed from her new obsession. Sheriff Forbes calls Damon and Stefan to the hospital, where someone has been attacking patients. Still trying to force Katherine to help her, Bonnie refuses to give up on her plan to defeat Silas. As a violent wind storm causes a power outage in Mystic Falls, ghosts suddenly appear – some with good intentions and some bent on revenge.
The Vampire Diaries season 4, episode 22 “The Walking Dead” airs next Thursday, May 9, at 8/7c on The CW.
