Last week on The Vampire Diaries we were faced with a twist that means we could very well lose Damon Salvatore as well as Elena Gilbert. However, we have a few reasons for Damon not to take the cure.

We know that Ian Somerhalder is (allegedly) still signed on for a seventh season, but with Patrick Dempsey’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy with a year still left on his contract we learned this TV season that anything is possible.

So it’s definitely a possibility that Damon and Elena could take the cure and run away with each other and live happy lives, but not only do we think that won’t happen, we also think that shouldn’t happen.

The show is already going to lose a major player when Nina Dobrev leaves with the season finale, despite however many people dislike her. The entire premise of The Vampire Diaries is a love triangle between Elena, Stefan and Damon so you can’t say she’s unimportant to the plot. Luckily the show’s love triangle hasn’t been a major part of the plot since the early stages of season 5, but it’s still going to be a major game changer when Elena is no longer part of the show.

Without her the show has to do everything they can to make sure they keep viewers interested and that means keeping both the Salvatore brothers. Without Damon then it just becomes Stefan’s Hero Hair Hour, and while we love Stefan we think he needs Damon in his life just as much as Damon needs him. Plus, if you get rid of Damon then the only reckless antiheroes we have left are going to be Enzo and Kai. We don’t want Enzo, and Kai’s only good trait is that he’s attractive – definitely not good enough reasons to have them be bigger stars next season.

Will Damon take the cure on ‘The Vampire Diaries?’
