We’re taking a look back at some of Nora and Mary Louise’s best moments as a couple on The Vampire Diaries!

Warning: This post obviously contains spoilers about Nora and Mary Louise’s story arc on The Vampire Diaries, season 7.

Nora and Mary Louise came to us as just two members of Lily’s strange heretic family, but they became so much more. They were the first ever gay couple on The Vampire Diaries, two characters trying to adjust to the scary world that we call the 21st century, and two halves of a beautiful and compelling love story.

The heretic chapter of The Vampire Diaries, season 7 is basically finished and with its closing, Nora and Mary Louise met their tragic end. Many fans are upset because their death adds two more to the body count of the #BuryYourGays trope (this is a real problem, and we’re sick of it too!) or simply because the show lost two great and unique characters. On the other hand, some fans are happy because they didn’t enjoy the heretic story line and are excited for the show to move on.

Whether you’re ecstatic or outraged (or anywhere in between), you have to admit that Nora and Mary Louise brought some beautiful and entertaining moments to The Vampire Diaries season 7. We got to watch them learn and grow together, and they got a send off that was worthy of their epic, 133 year love story. Remember, The Vampire Diaries is a world where more people come back from the dead than not, so it’s always possible that we haven’t seen the last of these women. Until then though, let’s take a look back at some of their highlights!

When they realized they didn’t have to hide anymore

We still have a long way to go in terms of equality for the LGBTQ+ community, but we’ve definitely made a whole lot of progress since the 1800s. Nora and Mary Louise fell in love in a time when they had no choice but to hide their feelings for one another. It never stopped them from loving each other just as fiercely, but it must have been so relieving and refreshing for them to realize that they could be a little bit more open about their identity as a couple in the new world that they entered.

When they protected each other

Neither of these women are anything close to a damsel in distress. They are among the most powerful villains we’ve seen on The Vampire Diaries, and they could individually take on anybody that got in their way pretty effortlessly. Even so, they care about each other so much that even a slight threat of one being hurt either physically or emotionally sends the other into a murderous rage. Even when Nora and Mary Louise were just the evil, sadistic villains of the season, their love for each other was still charming!

When Mary Louise proposed to Nora

Commitment-phobes be warned: this declaration will give you serious anxiety. After 133 years of being in love with Nora, Mary Louise knows that she would never want to spend a single day without her. Keep in mind that eternity really means eternity for vampires! It was so cute to see Nora’s face light up and how happy the girls were.

When Mary Louise apologized

You would think these two had weathered just about every obstacle in their century together, but there are still new challenges facing them as a couple everyday. The Vampire Diaries, season 7 showed Nora and Mary Louise adjusting themselves to the 21st century in very different ways. It highlighted differences between them that they might not have even noticed. Mary Louise messed up when she picked Julian’s side, but she realized that there was no choice worth losing Nora over and deeply regretted not trusting her.

When Nora Proposed to Mary Louise

After everything they went through since emerging from the prison world, it was Nora’s turn to acknowledge that she would still choose Mary Louise everyday and every time. Each girl proposed in a way that was fitting for their character. Mary Louise’s proposal with the large diamond ring was old fashioned and practical, like her, while Nora’s proposal with the ring pop was more fun, modern and spontaneous. When Mary Louise accepted Nora’s proposal, it was truly like she was accepting Nora for everything that she was, and vice versa. Eternity is back on! Unfortunately, as we know, some infinities are smaller than others…

When there was no life without the other

Nora would have done anything to save Mary Louise but unfortunately, there was just no way. Their remaining time together was significantly reduced when Nora received the mark of the huntress. Mary Louise resolved to use her last remaining strength to free Nora from the curse, but Nora knew that a life without Mary Louise would be equivalent to one spent in the hell stone. In a beautiful scene, they died together to take away Rayna’s power, once and for all!

How will you remember Nora and Mary Louise from ‘The Vampire Diaries’?
