In new interviews, The Vampire Diaries season 4 guest stars Phoebe Tonkin and Grace Phipps talk about their characters.

We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of new characters April (Grace Phipps) and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), who are both coming to Mystic Falls shortly to break up the group dynamics!

Hayley, of course, is coming in as a werewolf friend of Tyler’s, and that is sure to unsettle Caroline. But that’s not the only reason she’s there, Tonkin tells EW. “She kind of speaks before she thinks, especially to people that are probably a little bit dangerous,” Tonkin says. “I think her mouth could get her into trouble… possibly!”

Meanwhile, Phipps has spoken to Zap2It about April, who came to town to attend her father’s (the creepy Pastor) funeral. She compares April to a season 1 Elena, saying, “April really, really looks up to Elena, so that’s been really fun to play with. She kind of mirrors her a little bit. April grew up with Elena babysitting her, so they’re very close.”

She also reveals that April will indeed form a romantic attachment to someone on the show (we’re betting Matt or Jeremy!). Despite her tragic past, April is “not a depressed person. She’s not a person who goes around blaming. I mean, she’s 16, so you’re not entirely stable at that point, you’re a teenager, but she’s not a tragic person, she just got thrust into a tragic situation. There’s a conflict between the person that she wants to be and the situation that she’s in.”

Are you excited to meet Phoebe Tonkin’s character? And what about April – what do you think of her? Is she a good addition to the show? Sound off in the comments!

The Vampire Diaries returns next Thursday with the third episode of season 4, “The Rager,” which airs at 8/7c on The CW.
