The Vampire Diaries mid-season finale, “Christmas Through Your Eyes,” aired last night and we learned some new facts about vampire blood.

Cancer Cure? Nah.

Caroline’s mom shows up to her dorm and wants to spend time with Caroline for Christmas. Stefan then arrives to help decorate, and Caroline is confused about why. He says he’s trying, but then Caroline gives up on him and he leaves.

All of a sudden Sheriff Forbes gets really light headed and collapses. Stefan shows up in time to help her and they take her to the hospital, where the doctors keep her sedated as they figure out what’s going on. Stefan talks to Elena, and he tells her he overheard the doctors talking about Sheriff Forbes having cancer. Elena then compels one of the doctors to tell her what’s going on, and it’s a tumor that’s impossible to operate on, and Sheriff Forbes knew for a couple of weeks.

Elena wants to tell Caroline so she doesn’t have to hear it from a stranger, but Stefan insists he does it. When he does Caroline says the solution is simple: Give her vampire blood. But then Stefan gives us the mind-numbingly dumb information that says vampire blood apparently can’t cure cancer.

Welcome Home

Jo calls Alaric to tell him she’s dealing with a ton of attacks at the hospital so she won’t be home for dinner. Then Kai shows up and drugs her with a syringe, so she really won’t be home for dinner.

In a meeting with Luke and Liv, Tyler tells them they need to keep Kai alive for now, because if Kai merges with Jo then Luke and Liv won’t have to merge. However, this means that he’ll become the most powerful witch in their coven and probably kill them all, so Luke doesn’t like it. This is the beginning of seeing how much faith Luke has in his siblings: aka none.

Then Kai somehow shows up and leads Luke and Liv to where he’s keeping Jo. He tells them he has the dagger that holds Jo’s magic, and continues to stab Jo with it to give her magic back. However, it doesn’t work. Jo says getting the magic back has to be her choice, it can’t be forced, so Kai goes to get bandages to keep Jo from bleeding to death while telling Liv to figure out a way to get the magic back inside her.

Liv talks to Jo to convince her that she’s strong enough to take on Kai, and Jo starts believing her when Kai shows up and almost kills Liv. To stop him from doing so Jo takes the dagger and absorbs her magic back.

Damon and Alaric then show up to help, luring Kai out into the non-magic portion of Mystic Falls. Alaric is about to kill Kai with a gun to his head when Jo stops him, saying it’s not fair for Luke and Liv to have to merge. She wants to merge with Kai instead, because she thinks she could beat him – she just needs time. So they stupidly keep Kai alive.

Unfortunately for Jo, she doesn’t have time. Why? Because Kai realizes how big the spell around Mystic Falls must be to keep all magic out of it and digs into the ground to absorb the magic. Whatever he’s doing is causing weird electrical surges all throughout the town and even the cell service starts to get funky. He then removes the spell surrounding Mystic Falls and in turn has a ton of magic. He kicks Alaric’s ass and then ditches them, leaving them to fend for themselves.

But at the very least they’re allowed to go home now, so they decide to deal with Kai later. Damon and Stefan manage to get back to their house, and Damon invites Elena over for dinner, but when Elena shows up he can’t see her. Why? Because Kai cast a cloaking spell over himself and Elena and knocks her out. They really should’ve dealt with Kai immediately, but nah.

Matt: AKA Tripp

During the entire episode Matt has become more douchey than usual. Damon calls Matt to tell him about Kai, but Matt doesn’t really care since he’s already busy trying to hunt down Enzo with Jeremy.

Enzo shows up to talk to Matt, who says he’s giving him info about Monique, but of course he’s lying to get Enzo to show up. Jeremy also shows up and they kick Enzo’s ass. Of course Matt, being a complete douchebag for no reason, is also being an idiot because he doesn’t just stake Enzo, he wants to torture him because he deserves it.

Jeremy doesn’t agree with Matt’s tactics, saying he’s being just like Tripp, and we agree. He tells Matt that this whole “us vs them” concept needs to stop because it’s going to drive him crazy, but Matt doesn’t listen.

Matt drives Enzo over the border to kill him, but because of Kai’s spell absorbing powers it doesn’t work. Enzo then tells Jeremy that now he’s going to have to help him take all the happiness out of Stefan’s life, because Stefan has everything Enzo wants.
