As The Vampire Diaries continues to shoot its series finale this weekend, another fan favorite character has announced his return.

Coming on the heels of the long-awaited Nina Dobrev announcement, Steven R. McQueen, who we all know as Jeremy Gilbert, has also announced his return to the show.

Say hi to some old friends

The last time we saw Jeremy, he was lying to almost everyone he knew about going to art school, when he was really going to utilize his vampire hunting skills!

It’ll be interesting to see if he gets to reunite with his sister, Elena, or not. Hunters live an ordinary life span, so if Bonnie lives a full life, he might not live to see her awaken.

However, the fact that Steven R. McQueen is coming back could be a big clue that Elena will wake up sooner, rather than later. That could mean that Bonnie dies early, or that they find another way out of the spell.

We hope we get to see him reunite with Elena, but if he can’t, we’re also excited to see him reconnect with his friends (maybe closer to frenemies in some cases), and to see how the news of what he’s actually been up to will go down (if he tells them, that is).

So, that announcement confirmed that we’ll see the two living Gilberts in The Vampire Diaries series finale, but we also know we’ll see at least one of the deceased family members!

David Anders, who played John Gilbert, first announced his return this week, in a cryptic tweet.

Since then, he’s been tweeting some fun pictures from the set, including this one, featuring Nina Dobrev.

His tweets also reveal that Kayla Ewell (Vicki Donovan) and Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood), who we just saw in The Vampire Diaries season 8, episode 10, are involved in the finale.

John Gilbert gave up his life so Elena wouldn’t become a vampire in The Vampire Diaries season 2, so at least she’ll be a human again for his return!

If he’s coming back, it looks like they’re trying to include just about everyone they can get their hands on. We can imagine what Jeremy’s role will be, but it’ll be interesting to see what role the dead characters play, in the series finale. We’re getting more excited (and sad) by the day!
