Looking forward to The Vampire Diaries‘ fourth season starting up tonight?! Now shippers have even more reason to get excited for what’s to come!

Speaking to TV Guide, The Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec speaks about the controversial central love triangle of Stefan, Elena and Damon – which was kind of resolved at the end of season 3, and yet not at all.

At the end of the season, Elena had decided to choose Stefan; the person that she felt was right for her, and who she felt safe with. But now that Elena is turning into a vampire, this choice might not be as valid anymore.

“Without a doubt the triangle has been refreshed and reset with the actions of Elena going over that bridge and becoming a vampire,” Plec reveals. Likening Elena’s transformation into her becoming an adult, she says, “as we go from adolescence to adulthood, what do we need in our lives, the love we had or the love we wish we had? That’s going to be a big part of the season: What does Elena becoming a vampire do to both her relationship with Stefan and her friendship with Damon? It’s the same question [she previously] asked but from a different perspective.”

However, don’t look for the Elena/Stefan relationship to fizzle out before it’s even had a time to properly restart. “They realize if they want to they can be together forever so in a small way it’s a small victory in this whole catastrophe,” the showrunner says. But the pair will face some problems. “I like to use the analogy of being sober, but your girlfriend just turned 21 and wants to party. For Stefan, Elena usually supports him and is now the one needing to be supported, so who’s going to keep Stefan from falling over the edge?”

Plec also talks about the structure of the fourth season, saying, “Episode 2 gives us a glimpse of what she’s going through and then every episode that follows centers on some element of being a new vampire, for better or for worse, and what it’s doing to her.”

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight at 8/7c with 4×01 “Growing Pains.” Are you excited?
