Last night on The Vampire Diaries we found out how the phoenix stone worked, and it’s pretty much exactly what we thought it was.

Old souls, new bodies

Definitely the biggest arc of the episode was finding out exactly what the phoenix stone did when it “brought people back to life.” It was about time, too, since Bonnie already brought back two people using the stone!

Turns out the stone doesn’t actually bring anyone back from the dead. It actually houses a bunch of old vampire souls inside of it, trapped like genies in a bottle. Upon using the spell Bonnie actually put the souls of two old vampires into the bodies of Oscar and Jo, unknowingly bringing back two people who were not Oscar or Jo.

That is why Oscar and Jo didn’t act like themselves in this episode, and in the end Oscar ended up dying by the hands of Enzo. After choosing the stone over Enzo, Lily really pissed him off and he killed Oscar — partly in retaliation and partly for self-defense since Oscar was trying to kill him for the stone.

The good news is that Alaric was able to find out the information about who was really back, but the weird news is that he still chose to care for Jo and bring her home with him to help her figure out who she really is. We have a feeling this isn’t going to go over so well in the long run, but hey we could be wrong — Alaric does have two kids in the future.

Julian returns

A couple of weeks ago we were introduced to the character Julian, who was Lily’s vampire love interest. Valerie painted a horrible picture of Julian because she told us he had killed her unborn baby as well as forced her to stay away from Stefan, and was just a horrible person in general. So we don’t like him very much.

Lily was so adamant about getting Julian back and tonight we learned he died in 1903 and she’s been spending this entire time trying to bring him back to life. She’s clearly jaded, and she doesn’t see it. Fortunately for her she manages to get a hold of the phoenix stone and bring him back to life, but unfortunately for her Damon knows just how important Julian is to her.

Damon wants to let her have her previous Julian for a few days (or however long he chooses) until he kills him, so Lily can feel the true pain of a lost love. The question is, how powerful is Julian really, and can he be manipulated or killed as easy as Damon thinks? Probably not.

Bonnie and… Enzo?!

In this week’s glimpse to the future we see Bonnie in some sort of…rehab center, we guess? And she admits she made a mistake a long time ago and wishes she could take it back. We’re all thinking this mistake is bringing Jo back from the dead, but that might not be it!

After she admits this she goes to her room and finds Enzo there, who she then runs up to and makes out with. Excuse us!? We have absolutely no idea where this romance is coming from and we’re not sure we like it…do you?
