The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 4, “I Carry Your Heart With Me,” aired last night and we found the plot moving two steps forward but one step back.

It’s normal for The Vampire Diaries to go back and forth when it comes to plot. Seven years into the groove we’ve learned what to expect when magic spells happen and then backfire and then happen again and then stop, and so on. Following Mystic Falls traditions plans and agreements were made but tonight they were broken again. Check out what we mean with our review of this episode.

2 steps forward

Let’s talk about how The Vampire Diaries has moved forward in their season long arc tonight. The biggest deal of the episode, which always happens at the end, was Jo finally coming back to life! We’d long expected this to happen, especially since we have a theory about her and the mysterious hunter in the future, but it was still really exciting to see her eyes pop open at the end of the episode! We’ll have to stay tuned to find out what this means for the rest of the season, but things should be interesting!

Another major move forward in the episode was Stefan and Caroline finally (we repeat, finally) going for each other. After weeks (months for us) of debating whether or not they’re going to be together they finally were able to remove Valerie’s spell that made Caroline’s skin untouchable and now we get to see our favorite couple get it on! Did that sound creepy? Well, it’s true. We’ve been waiting so long for this ship to set sail and now that it has we’re so happy — but don’t remind us about the fact that Stefan isn’t Caroline’s fiancé in three years, we’re still bitter about that one preview…

1 (or more) step back

And of course here’s the part of the episode where all of the work of the past episodes basically gets undone. Damon, having kidnapped Oscar in order to use him as leverage to get Elena’s body back, had discovered that Valerie actually killed Oscar while he was away. But is that going to stop him? No! Of course there’s the convenient phoenix stone that can bring the dead back to life, so he gets Bonnie to use that to bring Oscar back. Of course, Oscar is not the same as he was and starts going on a murderous rampage through Mystic Falls. In the end Damon was able to catch Oscar and trade him for Elena.

But Oscar being dead and then alive again isn’t the only step backwards in plot. Damon’s agreement to stay away from Mystic Falls is also now null and void, and Lily basically accepted the fact that Damon is going to be back in Mystic Falls again. Damon’s agreement from the past episode, Oscar’s life and Lily’s power have all gone back to the way they were two episodes ago.

So now we’re back at square one: Lily and her heretics are in control of the town. Well, square two if you consider the fact that one of the heretics is still dead.

Oh, and one more thing…

Every week we’ve gotten a glimpse of what the future has in hold for our favorite Mystic Falls gang and we saw the most confusing thing to date: Alaric has kids?! Two girls, twins, are being taken care of by their dad three years into the future. The fact that they are twins make us 98% positive they’re Jo and Alaric’s kids since Jo’s family line always births twins. However…Jo was dead, so does that mean she’s so alive she can procreate? And does Alaric know she’s hunting vampires? We’re so lost.
